Father Daughter White Tails
« on: November 01, 2012, 06:31:11 PM »
Well my Chewelah hunt started last summer when I told my wife I wasn’t going home to Chewelah to hunt this year because of the gas prices. I would hunt around here for black tails. She said I should go and hunt and help my Dad around the farm. I have five daughters who have all harvested deer. My 13yr old is the only one left and is in junior high now and I can’t take her out of school for a week let alone the 2 weeks I planned to take off. She loves to hunt and has harvested 3 deer out of 4 years of hunting; this is her 5th year of hunting.                                                                               At the last minute my wife said I could take her over the 12th because she doesn’t have school and she would drive over Sunday the 14th and take her home the 15th. We hunted opening morning and that afternoon we made a blind in a field 138yds from an apple tree that the deer go to. The weeds were tall so we sat a table in the weeds and camoed it up. Put out chairs and camoed them behind us to break up our silhouettes.
That night a nice buck came down the draw but didn’t pop out at the tree. The next morning we sat in the back of the field and a buck walked up the creek line. I whistled and he stopped. I told her to hold dead on right in line with his off leg. Bang, he jumped like he was hit and ran. Another legal buck (4 point rule) walked up the same route the first buck took as we gave her deer some time to die. I could have shot him but he was too small for the first weekend. It was about 40 min.s when we started to look. We only found a few small drops of blood and that was it. 5 hrs of looking and no buck. I ranged it back and it was 275 yds. It was my fault I should have had her hold at the top of his back. That afternoon we were back at the table blind and a yorked horn ate apples while we sat in the rain. He left and 15 min.s later a legal buck stepped out at the tree. She made a nice neck shot and dropped him. High fives it was great for her to get her deer. My buddy was hunting another field in a ground blind with his daughter and heard the shot and called. It was only 5 pm so he came over to sit with his daughter. A legal buck came out along the creek and she couldn’t shoot it, so my buddy did. His daughter had to go to school so we hunted Friday after school and harvested a nice doe from the ground blind. All tags filled but mine. I saw the smaller legal buck almost every night and got him on my trail cam each night too. The next Saturday I sat in the field and saw the smaller buck come out with a bigger one. I got him on my cam that night so I thought it was time to fill my tag and get some work done for my Dad. The next evening he came out and bang neck shot at 64 yds. After I hung him I noticed he was grazed by a bullet in his left front leg. It was the buck my daughter shot opening weekend. It took him a week to come back and hang with the smaller buck we saw him with. It was a great vacation, made a 435yds shot on a coyote, 11 ducks, one rooster pheasant and held a dirt bag at gun point for the cops. He was breaking into my Dads barn at 2:30 am.

A well documented hunt!  It is awesome to see an outcome on a wounded deer especially knowing they would have survived.  Better yet!  Getting a second chance.  Congratulations!

If we were supposed to be vegetarian God would have made broccoli more fun to shoot!
"HOYT" why would you even consider shooting something else?
