I had the pickup fall off the end of the fuel tube in the tank, causing some headaches as well. Check the fuel lines while your at it. The ethanol tends to eat them up. I only get my gas at the Texaco on 116th. Its ethanol free.

Could be crank seals(worst case scenario). Could be carburetor issues(not as bad).  Could be bad fuel line/filter(you wish).  The best way to figure out what the problem is is with vacuum pressure tester.   Its a simple system that blocks off and isolates certain parts of the saw and finds leaks.  Find someone who has the tester and they'll be able to tell you exactly whats wrong with it before you go dumping money into what MAY be wrong.

heres an example of the thing im talking about.

The chainsaw guy shop talk Stihl 032 chainsaw pressure, vacuum testing 10 20

impulse lines cracking, or not sealing on the carb fitting are pretty common on the 031/032 saws.  bogging or dying when you push on the saw is a common symptom of this(the line will seal well enough to keep pumping fuel to the carb and not leak when the mounts are "at rest" but when the mounts flex the crack opens up and you've got an air leak).

best thing you can do is to take it to a shop and have it pressure and vacuum tested like other have said.  that will eliminate an air leak as an issue.  parts for those old saws are mostly "no longer available" but as far as i know, seals, impulse lines and cylinder gaskets are readily available.  if there isn't an air leak, then your problem is more than likely carb related.  could be easy, like putting a kit in, or not so fun, like having a worn out inlet needle seat(you'd need a new carb then).
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
