mag question
« on: November 07, 2012, 09:51:00 AM »
how is everyone carrying their extra mags when carrying concealed.  i carry my gun iwb but havent found a comfortable way to carry a spare mag unless it's owb.  kinda defeats the purpose of concealing the gun when there's a mag right there to see??????

seriously?
What... do you expect to get jumped by insurgents while combing the desert for terrorists? or mobbed by a WHOLE gang?

lol....   really consider, will you ever need more than 1 Mag?
condsider every scenario in which you'd need to whip out yer gun and go to town.
Usually just 1 shot is plenty enough for the task.
so... baring Zombies, do you really need more than 1 mag?

If you will shoot lots... like how when I pack a .22 along while hunting in case I see grouse, you can allways keep extra mags in a small pouch on you back pack. or designate a pocket of your pack to mags only.

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."

having spent a lot of time in Iraq and Afghanistan i can tell you from experience that when $h!t hit the fan and you are shooting for your life, one shot is not all it takes.  it's very easy to say that and believe it until you are in a situation the rounds are going both ways.  What about malfunctions?  ever had a gun double feed or stovepipe?  It will always happen when you least need it to.  save the reteric.  I asked a simple question.

Yep, what happens when mag fails?  Its like a gun, I would rather carry it and not need it....  I put mine in a pants pocket.  1911's are thin enough.  My Glocks stick out a bit more, but people shouldn't be looking at my butt.

Plenty of reasons why a second, third, whatever, mag may be needed. I would throw one in a pocket or maybe small of the back.

I don't carry extra except while hunting. 1 in the pipe and 13 in the clip are enough. If your mag fails, you're screwed anyway. Keep it clean and practice a lot. If it's going to fail, it'll happen during practice.

Back pocket works for an extra mag. then two more in the truck. Running out of rounds is an experiance that would change some peaples minds really fast if there ever so unluccky.

So, you're saying you would carry extra ammunition to shoot grouse, but you wouldn't carry extra ammunition if you had to defend yourself from the most dangerous predator on Earth?

I like to carry at least one extra magazine but like the OP, I don't have an easy way to carry one.
My regular carry guns are a Ruger LCP and a Ruger SR9c.  The LCP magazine fits in my weak side front pocket pretty well.  What I don't like is that it shares the pocket with my cell phone.  The full size 17rd SR9c magazine goes into that same pocket when I do carry it (which is not that often).  I have kind of a bad habit of not carrying an extra magazine if I feel comfortable about the safety my destination (Sporting goods store, local grocery store...).  Another bad habit is only carrying the LCP when going to the store because it is more convenient.  My primary carry gun should be carried most often, and it should be a 'fighting' handgun like the SR9c.

But that's what you avoid when you do carry an extra magazine.   Drop the bad mag and put the new one in.  All better.

My solution to this problem is an XDm in .40 S&W.  16+1   That's 17 rounds to get the job done, after the first 6 or so, if the job isn't done, I'm turning the situation into a tactical withdrawal.

With all of these crazies shooting up malls and what not I can definitely see a use for an extra mag in some sort of stand off.

Extra mag isnt for carry more rounds.  It is for when you have a mag failure.  Extra rounds are just a bonus.

Or you can just carry a revolver.  :chuckle: They are far less prone to complex malfunctions.

I'm serving in a theater right now where we're in uniform but concealing M9s at the same time.  I carry with an IWB, but have two BlackHawk mag holders on my opposite hip.  With my blouse covering over, you usually can't see.

If you were wearing a flannel untucked, or a button up shirt untucked, you might be good.

Barring that, you could always slide an extra into your pants pocket... :dunno:

Double-feeds, Jams, etc., seen plenty of those, but what exactly do you mean by 'magazine failure'?  Your typical issue magazine for an M9 or M4 is pretty cheap and low quality, and I never saw one of those 'fail'.
