What's the status of the RUT for late buck?
« on: November 13, 2012, 11:20:06 AM »
Whats the general consensus of the west side rut for LB 15-18? Are they still going hard? I personally think that it didn't even get going full speed during the last week of general season, but possibly between seasons they had their fill of forest hole. In other words, am I going to have to bust brush this weekend with the shotty, or stick to clear cuts with my rifle? lol

Around my area, the first day of modern elk they were moving.  I went out and saw 5-different bucks in the daylight.  Now you'll just be seeing the areas where the rut is late, and the second heat for the previously missed does.  Should be some nice ones moving still.

This guy was out in the open along with a larger buck that I couldn't get a decent picture of.  About 9:30am, Saturday morning, both literally standing in the middle of the road, both let me get up to within 50 feet of them, but the bigger one was on the opposite (right) side of the road and moved more into the jack firs so couldn't get a clear picture of him.

First pictures are cropped down from when I first pulled up, so a little out of focus due to distance.  Both were rutted-up, but the bigger one didn't stay in the road long enough to get a picture of him by the time I was able to get my camera in action, but could easily have been shot if I had been deer hunting.

Last Saturday saw two bucks while elk hunting. One was in hot pursuit of a doe, the other one walked to within 25 feet of my huntting partner, stood there and looked and sniffed the air for about five minutes before turning and walking away. Hope they are still stupid this weekend.
The worst day hunting is better than any day at work!

I live in an area with quite a few deer, went for a bike ride yesturday and didn't see any deer.  We ususally see deer this time of year all over the place, haven't seen 1 for 3 weeks.

Last night there was two 2pts and a spike chasing a doe all over my neighbors back 40 acres...and he just gave my and my dad permission to hunt

This evening in about a 1 hour timeframe I was watching a 3x4 chasing a doe, he was grunting his lungs out. Then half hour later I see a 3x3 making a rub in the very same group of reprod.

THEN I heard a gun shot and go flagged down by a tag holder who shot a huge (his words) 2pt with eyeguards at the other end of the same reprod....we just got done looking for his buck and never found a drop of blood. Just a bunch of hair at the spot the buck was standing. He shot it at 30ft with a 45 long colt  :dunno:

It's been an eventful 2 days of rut activity. It seems a lot more active now then a week ago. But I might have just been at the right place right time.
