Thats a good toutle bull, congrats!  My dad and I had a real nice 6x6 scouted out but he was shot the second day in the Loowitt.  Bummer.  He did pass a few spikes and never got his bull.  Thats fine because he wanted a mature bull. NOT A GIMMIE TAG.  Winston is probably better, just more hunters. :twocents:

Had the Whittier tag this year.  Saw 50-75 bulls in that unit and in the Loowit/Margaret nearby.  Nothing even approaching 300.  Only a very few 6x6.  And nothing in the unit worth packing out.  Did pass up a medium 5x6 first day.  Seems the bigger bulls I've seen killed this year are more "in the brush" on farms at lower elevations.  It is strange that the high country, where hunting is very limited didn't have any big bulls.  Biggest bull I have seen was an even 7x7 wintered at Coldwater around 1993.  Got him on video.  USFS named him Bruce.

If someone shot that bull in the Loowit, I certainly hoped you called it in and reported a poaching... the Loowit is closed to all hunting, trapping, etc.. has been since the mountain blew up.

As for the backcountry, my brother and I watched a huge bull bedded down behind a log... his whale tail was huge, and that was thru 10x binos at over 1200 yards... brother was seriously drooling about wanting a Margaret tag..   Not sure why you folks can not find the big bulls, but they are there, if you know where to look...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Another hunter told us the guy had a mudflow tag?  Second hand knowledge so im not presuming he poached.  I hope he was legit.  Gold ford 150 2002ish. Nice bull but maybe a 300 bull.  I havent ever seen a monster st helens bull, including the guys laying in the mudflow/loowitt.

The tribes still hunt the Loowit.

Ya the biggest I saw this year was a 6pt in a farm field off hiway out of Toledo!  My old man and his hunt partner talk about the big boys they used to see up coldwater way etc.  They had one about ten years ago that they nicknamed Bo Derek! :chuckle:

Hey Fireweed, did you have the modern Bull tag for Whittier?  if so, My brother and I talked to you and your wife/girlfriend on Opening day 10/20.  We had his cow elk already and talked to you briefly in the snow at our camp off the lakes trail.

The Whittier elk permit is in Loowit. Cougar hunting is also allowed in Loowit.
