Zwickey Judo's
« on: September 04, 2008, 04:16:34 PM »
Anyone ever used a Zwickey Judo on small game? Thoughts?

I've always carried a bludgeon or two in case I stumble across a delicious looking grouse during a deer hunt...but today I was in Sportsmans and my buddy (employee) decided I needed to try these little spring loaded doohickies out.

Haven't shot one yet, but they seem effective at stopping a hand thrown arrow.

A quick google seems to show nothing but good reviews!

I have not used them, but hear they work well.  I just put some "adders" behind my field points for the occasional small game.  Like the G5 Small Game Head too.  Looks pretty wicked for small game, but not cheap.

I have taken several rabbits with Judo points.  They do a number on them, that's for sure.  Those spring arms take a lot of fur and meat with them when they blast right through.  They are also very durable in my experience, surviving impact into wood with no damage.  The do make it easier to find your arrow for the most part.

I guess I'll hope for head shots on those grouse, then.

A pic of one on my "cheapy" spare arrows:

Great for stump shooting, and they protect the tip of your arrow better.  I have had inserts and arrow tips bent and flattened when using blunts.  I have not shot game with them, since I use my field points for rabbits and grouse.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

I'm thinking about going and picking up some judo's or adder's for a couple of my arrows.  I've got a pretty good supply of rabbits here.  I've been holding off on shooting them with my field points affraid that it will tear up my arrows when they go through.

I need to go pick upsome more arrows for my bow.  I am down to 4 or 5.  I've been shooting what I believe are MFX340's.  I'd like to get bare shafts and have my color fletching put on them.  Any know of a shop around olympia that can do it?  I know of Fletch Setters, been in a few times but he's never done anything on my bow or put arrows together for me.  Anyone use him or know anyone closer?

Some of the rabbits around here have worms. Just a warning. I have judos and blunts. Prefer the blunts because they tend to not hang up in branches or needles as much but it really doesn't seem to be a large problem either way. I have also once used the field point.

The Judos will work great on small game like cottontails, ruffed grouse, and squirrels. But I've found that they don't always work so well on blue grouse. This year I am switching to the Muzzy SG-X:

The Muzzy's I have actually have a sharp tip that differs from the one in the picture above. But it looks like they'll get the job done.

I also have some of the G5 SMG's. They are a wicked small game head. The only drawback is that they are expensive (as has been mentioned) and they have a reputation for the claws breaking off.

I have used Judo points. They work well on both grouse and rabbits. Its been a few years since I hunted grouse with them but they do the job. The judo point catches on grass fairly well so your arrow wont skip around and stops pretty much where you were aiming. Not that anyone on here would admit to missing a grouse...

I have never missed a grouse. But plenty of grouse have missed my arrows.  :chuckle:

:chuckle:  Well I am out 2 arrow today from missing.  I need to get some judo or adder points thats for sure.

My question is how do you sight them in.  I'd imagine they are a pain the the butt to pull out of a Block target.  I read on the cabelas sight that when shooting addre points to sight your bow in using 125 gr tips and than switch to 100 gr tips when shooting the adder's.

What about sighting in with judo.  I am really new to the whole bow hunting thing so any advice would be great.  :)

I really like them as well.  Have killed a couple of grouse with them, one going right through making a bit of a mess of the meat (it was at very close range).

It seems to me that they shoot pretty similar to my field points but havent really shot them side-by-side.  I would assume they would tear up a block pretty quick.

Sometimes I try to find rotted stumps when walking out of the woods and using them as practice for gauging distances and different shooting angles.  The judo tips stop the arrow pretty quick and its usually not too tough to retrieve the arrow from the stump.

Michelle, in my experience Judos shoot really close to field points. But Bronson is correct that the best way to check them is to find some rotton stumps to shoot into.

One of my concerns in buying them was how true they would fly.
I've read a couple reviews since then (online) saying they fly very similar to a broadhead.

At distances inside 30yds, which is where all my small game shooting takes place, I can't see them being too far off.
I have a BIG piece of foam from the underside of a floating dock around here...I'll take a few shots in the next couple days to find out!

Let me know how they compare Bscman.  I'd hate to tear up my target trying to sight them in.
