Almost
« on: November 25, 2012, 08:23:15 PM »
Spent 5 days in the Nile - Tues thru Sat. Two chances. First on a BIG cow at about 45yds that spun around and disapeared in the timber Wednesday evening in that brief windy/snow storm right when I got to full draw. Next morning in the same area I walked up on two cows. They started walking away after spotting me or hearing me in the deep crunchy snow. I followed hoping for an opportunity and one of the cows finally presented one at about 55 yds broadside. Perfectly wide open beautiful shot except for the big bushy snow covered pine limb hanging right even with her back half way between us robbing me of the trajectory area needed for the shot. I let down after a long hold and wanting badly to shoot but didn't want to make a bad shot/hit. I tried bettering my position but they wouldn't have it. I tried catching up to them again with no luck but that's how it goes. At least I saw a few and got to pull the bow back.
How about everyone else?

I gave it a go Thanksgiving morning in the Winston, found out real quick my sprained ankle hurt like hell especially side-hilling so I drove a couple roads I've never been on and said the hell with it and went home and ate some turkey. Should be good to go to hit it hard next weekend.

Welcome back.  At least you get to draw your bow back and get your blood flowing in the cold.  :chuckle:

Thursday morning, I was up on my treestand.  A huge cow came right under my stand about 6 or 7 yards.  I drew my bow, took aim and I let go.  BANG! It looked like I missed.  She jumped around a tree and was standing about 10 yards from me broadside.  She put her nose up high and tried to test the wind.  I knocked another arrow.  Right when I was about to draw, she saw me.  She almost turned and I was at full draw.  I let the arrow fly.  Look like I missed too.  To make the story short, I was about at least 2 feet high on the second shot.  The first shot was about an inch or two high.  BUMMER!!!  At least I didn't injured her, but I did injured my shoulder.  Pulled a muscle drawing the bow in the cold.  I've never missed at that distance before.

Sako, Good on you for doing the right thing. A lot of guys would've let one fly and hope it worked out. Good Carma for you next time.

Sounds like you had a great hunt anyway. Getting out and seeing some animals, that's what it's all about. I spent my days in Naches with a group of great guys. I never hunted for Elk but sure did learn a lot. Thursday we saw 3 cows, 2 big bulls and a few Mulies. We snuck around a canyon & spotted the bulls that were following the cows. Next day I had a nice cow come past my blind, but 73 yards is beyond my comfort zone so I just watched her in awe. Saturday I saw a few cows running scared and saw about 10 hunters individually walk the hillside I had my blind on. A great time was had and I am more educated for next year.

Sounds like everyone at least saw some animals. Yajsab, sounds like you had an interesting day in the tree stand. I just heard from D Rock. No tags filled there either but his dad is still in camp hunting.
I learned something last week Thursday morning when it was cold. I was up in about a foot of snow with heavy clothes on and my pack of course. Pulling my bow back with all those clothes on plus my pack on a cold day with the bow set at 72lbs is a real chore. Felt like my shoulders were going to come apart before I got to full draw, LOL. I practice with my pack on all the time but not with that many clothes.
