Rino radio range?
« on: November 28, 2012, 12:36:37 PM »
So last week I was in the Winston unit and I put my rino 655 on radio scan.  I Picked up two other rino users load and clear.  Their location appeared on my rino at 8.5 miles away.  I had crystal clear reception and I was not on a hilltop.  I was on a road in timber in a bottom.  Is this what others have experienced with rinos?  I am truly impressed and wonder if those guys were transmitting at 5watt or 2watt.  I didnt interupt them to ask because I didnt want to be rude.

It is possible to get that range but there has to be some factors.  One could have been they were up higher than you were.  You talked about one too is what power were the tranmitting at too.  I have never used the Rino but by the sounds of it from other users of them on this forum....they are good units.

Ive picked up clear radio traffic 30 miles away with my 530hcx.  I was on a hilltop at the time.

I was getting clear reception out to 10 miles in Iraq.
Of course it was flat terrain.

low dense overcast sky will improve reception.

That was the other thing I was going to say too.  Has to do with the radio waves bouncing off the atmosphere can extend range too.  Like CB's and shooting skip.

No problem.  I am actually a radio technician for the last 25 years and am glad to help out people when it comes to stuff like this.

I dont want to sound like the "one upper" guy, but at about 3-4k elevation in the Entiat unit I picked up a guys conversation 38 or 39 miles away.  It was muffled but somewhat audible if I remember correct but my 650 picked up his location.

Montana: 530  HCX....mine and my partners radio....pushing 30 mi.  25+ for sure.
We were both in timber but close to the same elevation-ish.
.....Also been in situations where it's just too many obstacles for decent reception. Again... relating to elevation/cover.

Had similar experiences with my pair of 520 HCx's in the Blues.  Up high in elevation talking with my son out in the dryland north of me a good 20 miles or so.  Crystal clear.
