Salmon Eggs

Does anyone know where to buy some skeins at around the olympia area? Im running a little low, and with steelhead season upon us I would like to have a good supply.

Any place that looks like someone who sells salmon in their back yard. They will have eggs for sale. Gotta get there as soon as they get back from the river though.

Check with the Nisqually or Squaxin tribes.  They should have chum eggs right now.  The price of chum is crap so you might be able o make a deal.  I'd sell you some of my coho eggs but I'm hoarding them.

I tried to get some coho eggs from the skokomish tribe, they said $6 a pound, which isnt too bad besides the fact they were sold out and then offered me chum eggs for $15 a pound, needless to say I didnt pay that for some chum eggs im not that desperate. If you need a extra freezer to hoard some of those coho eggs in im ur man lol

Can't buy chum eggs for less then $12-$15 a pound as thats pretty much what the Japanese are paying them for the roe.

$8 A pound is as high as you should pay for eggs from indians. I've never had to go that route, but know several people that do and they tend to get them around $5-6 a pound

Guys I know go up towards quinalt, there's some fish market. Its a drive from oly, but gives ya a reason to go fish the coast and pick up eggs on the way.

Im sure there's more local places, im just not sure where. Any tribe is going to be selling eggs, they dont waste those

i don't get hung up on eggs for steelhead like i used to years ago.  they'll hit a lot of things just as well, like sand shrimp, prawns, and artificials(i've really started to like using yarn balls in the winter).  i'll usually cure up a batch or two per year for steelhead in borax, but the bulk of my eggs from the fall and winter get cured up and saved for springers and next fall.

i'd never consider paying something like $8 a pound, much less $15!

Yarnballs are addicting, I'll make a few hundred every year. I fish eggs alot with them, but they do well by themselves as well.

You finally said something that we can agree on Paul!     I made up several hundred last winter and like to fish yarnies (unless the water is really muddy) over bait.

I made some yarnballs but I tied them over a coffee straw.  So all I have to do is to insert my line through the straw and pull the yarn ball down to the hook.  The straw is big enough to push over the head of the hook.  I can tie in a little crystal flash or a little wing of a schlappen.  I like this...

I also have regular yarn balls as well.

Houndhunter showed me how to tie a secondary loop in addition to the regular egg loop.  It works great for centering your yarnie in the middle of the hook and also leaves you the regular egg loop for eggs.  Pretty slick set up.

I'd love to see that secondary loop trick. I've been meaning to make some yarn balls too. A guy on the nooch one day gave me a bag of them to try but I'm finally out now.
