10 minutes too late
« on: December 08, 2012, 08:54:41 PM »
A couple of weeks ago I got permission to hunt elk on some private property during the late muzzle season.  The first night I went to the field I decided to go in on the far end.  Just as I got set up I looked across the field and saw about forty elk coming out into the middle.  I hustled down and tried to get in position.  I went in on a little access road and quickly noticed two legal bulls.  The bad news  is that it was now past legal shooting time by less than10 minutes.  Pretty tough to resist especially since there was still good shooting light and the shot was less than 100 yards.  Headed down to check out the coweemen unit this week.  Trying to help a friend. The guy could really use the meat this year due to some recent financial issues.  Anyone familar with the unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I know at least a dozen folks who have been hunting the Coweeman since the opener and all of them are having a hell of a time finding shooters.  These are guys who fill their tags every year.  Not to be a wet blanket but the Cow has gotten slammed over the past few years add to the the lack of good snow, it makes conditions kinda bleak.  There are plenty of wild horses to shoot though.

that doesnt sound too promising. Any better ideas for the last weekend of muzzle? How is the deer hunting in coweeman?  I've hunted in about 5 different units this year and have come up with a big goose egg.  I would love to help this guy get something.

Coweeman has been tough hunting so far. I know the unit like the back of my hand and i am a little worried about getting my son in front of a cow in january. I have a friend that just spent the last week hunting the coweeman and he saw a doe. No elk, not one for a week spent in the woods.

I used to be able to find cows driving in in the morning.

I have also been up there with the family as they all have ML tags right now and they have had no action. And we are beating the brush. Still lots of people driving the roads.

jw there are still elk in the Coweeman, just not as many as a few years ago. All the cow tags have really hammered the elk. I am being a little hypocritical as we have cow tags this year...

Stick with the coweeman, find an old road that hasn't been over driven by road hunters, find tracks or good open timber or both and start walkin til you jump one bedded down. Walk slow and look they are easy to miss.

Hunted the cow all  last week seen  elk every day. One bull I have not found since I lost him after shooting hours. A lot more hunters than elk that is forsure. Good luck!
