Somebody checking my traps
« on: December 09, 2012, 02:42:15 PM »
 >:( Well the last two days I've had someone running my rat line before I get there. Today I moved the entirline except for 3 traps. A total of 14 traps have been pulled up on the bank, Traps that were well concealed and producing over the week, the traps that were in the open and not producing were left alone. One trap was stepped on and bent up a little but repairable.

I will be calling F&W in the morning and informing them of whats going on, maybe they will put in a presense at the parking area.

You can spend time trying to catch the guy,use a trail camera if you can to record vehicles going into the parking area. Or don't waste any more time and energy and pull out.  Wouldn't want to catch the guy myself because I'm not sure what I'd do if I did, so I'd pull out and move on.

So the jerk won? Some how he needs to get caught and dealt with or he'll do it to someone else. Also some other jerk may do it now too. :twocents:

Iceman, I think pnwmntmn is trapping a public access area, he stated he hoped the game dept would make a presence at the parking area. So if the person checking the traps has to park in the same area possible they will see him.

Yes, I am trapping in a pubic area 3 miles long 1/2 mile wide. Small parking area at the south end.

Let's not suggest those big "bearclaw" traps as they are worth too much money to be wasting on some lowlife.

hopefully I solved this problem by moving all my traps.

No I'm not enough to have served in Nam, but I know what pungi sticks are and the ground is either swamp or rock.

Is a rat a beaver? Or a muskrat. Sorry for the stupid question just see trappers talk about rats and never know what they mean.

Well I just bought a couple cage traps for beaver...not cheap.  Set one out in a small creek >:( off the road a ways...gone first check.  I heard a rig drive by on the logging road while I was setting.  It would have been hard to find if you weren't looking.  There are so many opportunistic losers around these days.

What type of cage? Could it have washed away? Got pulled away? I have found mine down stream several times. Put out the word. Certain kinds are rare so if someone comes up with one it would be VERY easy to find out if he bought it.

Could not have washed away the water had dropped... but I am thinking that perhaps it got pulled away...I did not see signs of struggle and it was about eight ft from the main creek in a feeder creek. Going back with chestwaders if the water continues to drop.  I was thinking if I caught a beaver or otter by the tail he could go aways before getting loose.

So, you guys can't use leg hold? here in Oregon I set leg hold with a drownder slide that way the rat or mink are under water and stone dead when I get there. Big plus is they are out of sight most times.
