Both of the articles linked below are good reading for someone trying to bed their first rifle.  I myself do not bed with the stock upside down unless I want to add a particular weight load to a pressure point at the tip.  That being said I think the first article is one of the better written ones out there for the beginner.

Thanks RadSav I will be bedding this gun after Christmas after my son opens his present. I order new scope mounts and rings, scope covers and a soft case to finish off the present. I will be installing my Refield 3X9 5 Goldstar scope on it. Can't wait to see his face Christmas morning.
