Had a shot
« on: December 21, 2012, 07:18:40 PM »
Went out today on an extended elk permit Toutle. My partner an I walked behind one of the gates. Not fresh snow but not crunchy either more like wet 4 or 5 inches. Walking with the wind in our face and up hill of course. As were reaching a clear cut my buddy grabs my arm an says COW.  She's all a lone on the side of the hill. Look hard I said she can't be alone. Within a minute or two she's talkin and looking right at us. We call back and get her attention where she starts heading towards us. Though looking in this small crop of trees as she's being vocal. Looking at my buddy I ask do you see another? no he says. Well when she gets behind that clump of trees lets move. About 5 minutes later she does what we hoped. So we started to boot scoot and gained almost 10 yards. This put us at about 100 to 125. I needed to get as close as I could. So when ever she wasn't looking I'd move closing the gap. Then all of a sudden this little spike come out of nowhere  :yike:. trotting to this cow. She starts to move back up the hill not fast but not stopped either. My buddy is saying get it she's going to run. I knelt down with took aim just at the top of her shoulder, BOOM! Smoke clears she and her little friend  start heading for the timber. I load another round and go after them triing to cut them off. When they hit the timber they went strait up an didn't look back. My buddy said I don't no where your shot went but it didn't hit that elk. We went up to take a better look to make sure. Yep I missed:chuckle: Alittle upset but not really since this was my first elk shot. Would I liked to have connected oh of course. But peeps! I had my first shot at an elk. Let a lone with a muzzy  :IBCOOL:.

Way to go Blacklab! No shame in a miss. Sometimes just seeing them is enough. There's always next year. Good story.

I've never missed.

As a matter of fact, no good hunters on the internet ever miss.

If you miss, it's because you are a horrible person and should be barred from hunting - and the internet - for life.   I learned that on hunting web sites.

LEGAL DISCLAIMER:   Yeah, I've missed, too.   As a matter of fact, I've invented several unique ways to not get elk with my muzzleloader.   It sure is fun when you get it right, though.    Keep at it, and good luck.   Post a pic when you drop one.
