photoshop elements has always served me well.  Its about 100 bucks.   It doesn't process raw if you are shooting in that.

Lots of folks turning to LIghtroom.   Not sure of the price and have never used it.

Photoshop CS?  works well, and processes RAW image.   I hardly post process so probably is overkill compared to what you can do with it.   I think its like $800 or something like that.  Seems crazy expensive

Paint shop Pro by Corel is good ( I see it at around $80.) and so is Photo Shop Elements. It really depends on how far you want to go and how much time you have to learn any program.

I like Elements. I don't shoot RAW but have read several articles indicating that RAW is supported in Elements. :dunno:

Most of your DSLRs come with their own software for processing RAW....

GIMP is a free program you can download off the internet.  It is very similar to Photoshop CS.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

I use Lightroom and CS5, they both are excellent although I tend to like CS better. As far as free software goes, you get what you pay for, and no free software is going to be "similar" to either Lightroom or CS, other than a few basic functions. :twocents:
