saturday rabbit hunt
« on: December 31, 2012, 06:43:54 AM »
went out this saturday morning with rangerGSP on this site. weather was perfect,we hunted until noon, the shooters did well, i think we seen about 11 or 12 rabbits, and brought 7 home. dogs did there part, lots of good races, dogs almost had one caught on the ground but it sliped away.

for cotton tails theres a few bird release sites around sw washington. and in oregon theres e.e. wilson area. theres lots of bunnies in a small area. but i mostly hunt the woods for the bigger brush rabbits. not as many rabbits in the woods, but they make for a longer race for the dogs.

how much room do you need for rabbits? i have about a million of them around my place, i only have 5 acres though not sure if the  neibors would lose their mind but it would be cool to thin them out, but they damn sure arent very big rabbits, fast little suckers though

jackmaster, it just depends how thick the cover is for them, if its all briars, the rabbits wont go very far, but if theres lots of open areas they will make about 500-800 yrd circles and probably run off the property. that is for cottontails. snowshoes and brush rabbits can make 1 mile circles or bigger.

lol. i wish she tried to help... the old dog was bringing the rabbits to us, and the pup trys to take them away from him. she took one back in the briars and i had to crawl back in to get the rabbit. not easy to get in a rabbit tunnel!

they can run in snow, but you dont want deep snow, maybe 3-6 inches is about perfect. yes they are beagles. it all depends on the price of a dog. and what kind of dog you are looking for. a good brush dog may not work out on the faster longer races like a snow shoe hare. and a hare dog might not get in the briars enough to push a cottontail rabbit enough. but a finished rabbit dog is alot cheaper then a bird dog. or finished hound. i would say 200-800 is about what they would go for. that is if you can find one around here.

Now that looks like a blast !   Congrats on a great day.  I need to start implementing some of my ideas instead of working. Mike

Awesome post man, it's been a long time since I've been on a rabbit hunt, my older brother used to run dogs back in Kentucky, that brings back some memories, congrats on the good hunt
