Toutle Cow #388 Down
« on: January 02, 2013, 11:59:56 AM »
Not too much of a story here.   Missed out on an opportunity earlier in the morning with a skiddish cow running with a young spike.  The snow made things pretty prohibitive in terms of getting where we scouted out earlier in the year, but we made due with what we had.

Driving down for the day at around 3:30, we neared the 4100 and I was glancing through the clear cuts for one last chance to harvest an elk that day (I would have been coming back down this weekend if I had not tagged out), and low and behold I spot a small group making its way from a cut into the timber.  We creeped into the cut a bit without spooking them, found a solid rest, ranged in the biggest girl at 206 yards, and BOOM.  Elk down.   She slid down into the timber a bit and wedged herself in between a tree and a stump on some pretty steep ground, so quartering her up was not easy, but we made the most of it.  Thanks to Silkonthewetside for the company and help - had a great day.

Anyone shoot a collared elk before?  We knew it was collared before taking the shot, she was by far the biggest, didn't have a calf with her, and was the only cow broadside to us.  I left a message with wdfw as instructed and haven't heard back.

Nicely done...never shot one with a collar.  Seen a lot of them before.  Keep us posted on what the wfwd says.

Thanks all!

Just spoke with WDFW- they were very cool:
-She was 16yrs old
-Tagged last Feb in the Toutle
-Has traveled to Coweeman
-She was pregnant last year, but not lactating (was not pregnant this year)
-No signs of hoof rot (none this year either)
-Was in great shape and healthy upon tagging
-The collar was a VHF, and they do not need it back...

16 years old??? holy "cow"! (no pun intended). Good job taking an older elk out of the herd, she was probably not going to live much longer anyway, I bet there wasnt much left for teeth :chuckle:

Nice shot placement, too. Well done!

Good job!! We are headed up Saturday morning to try and fill 4 tags. Due to time and inlaws have not had a spare minute to go out.
This is the first weekend we are all available.

Shot a cow in the Coweeman that was collared but no ear tag. Had to return collar to the state.

Great job on the cow 388! I hope she tastes better than the huge cow I shot last year with my bow. Don't know how old she was but she had really worn teeth. She also was the gamiest tasting elk I have killed. Lots of sausage!
If we were supposed to be vegetarian God would have made broccoli more fun to shoot!
"HOYT" why would you even consider shooting something else?

Congrats! You got alot of game meat for the year now. Have you heard back from WDFW yet on the collar? I think they will give you a little history on your cow.

Congrats!

I shot a collared one this year during archery season. They had me send in the collar and I haven't heard from them since  :bash:
