driver side window goes up with passenger side switch????
« on: January 09, 2013, 05:13:06 PM »
My driver side window is stuck up. wont go down with the switch. I took off the motor and checked it and works fine. I put motor back in with the window down. when I roll up the passenger side or driver side it will go up.  :bash:  I can take motor off and put window back down and go over to the passenger side and roll driver side window up with that switch also. When I unplug the window motor there is a clicking sound coming from the relay switch. I dont see any bad wires in the door jam. Does anyone have any info on something like this.

:yeah:  Or a bad ground--check all your ground wire attach points first.  Most all auto electrical problems can be traced to a bad ground.

Nothing got wet that I know of. Would a bad ground make both windows go up at the same time? The driver side will go up if I push the passenger side switch up or down.

My drivers side door and window controls quit working all the time last winter when we had those freezing temps that lasted a week or so. The dealer told me it's about 400 to fix. What's kinda wired is my neighbors car, different make, had the exact same thing happen to him the same week.

Yes.  If an electrical component loses its ground, often it will try to find one through another circuit. That's why you see other brake/taillights come on dimmer when a driver puts on the brakes or a turn signal.  The ground has been lost, so the circuit is feeding back through the bulbs in other lights looking for a ground.  In your case it might just be a short in the switch or switch wiring.  Check the fuses, too.  Sometimes a fuse will look good, but will be bad, or nearly bad.

Broken and or damaged wires contacting each other can cause this issue. Try manipulating the harness section between the door and body on the drivers side to verify. This is typically where that issue happens as it gets flexed the most.  :twocents:

Hardest part of working on a door is getting the panel off.  A Chiltons or Haines manual will tell you how to do it, or go to the Library and look it up in the repair manuals.  Usually when window glass comes off the track, it's because some of the plastic/nylon guide rollers are broken.  They are cheap and easy to replace.  If you break any door panel clips, replacements are available at most Auto Parts stores.  Just take it slow and don't force anything.

I was messing around with the door again and found out that When I push the switch there is a power getting into the ground???? Only for a sec when I push the switch then it goes away and I hear a click. How does a power get into the ground without blowing a fuse?  :bash:

Electricity is like water.  It has to go somewhere to keep flowing.  The current lights a bulb element because the electrcity has to pass through the element to get to the ground.  Motors and everything else that runs on electricity operate the same way.  Take away the ground, and the power has noplace to go, so it stops.  Fuses only limit the amount of current flowing through a circuit.  Think of what happens when you put a 1 volt bulb in a 12 volt circuit.  POP!   The bulb acts like a fuse, and can't handle the flow.  (funny how much I know about electricity, but am a total dunce when it comes to this Hi-tech stuff!  :chuckle: )

I got it fixed today. There was a loose ground wire. It was crazy to me how many things can be messed up and power feeding into the ground. Thanks for all the info. This was driving me crazy.  :chuckle:

 Good deal!  Most auto related electrical problems are simply a bad ground!
