A “Guns Across America” rally will be held at “High Noon” Saturday in Olympia, one in a weekend mobilization at all 50 state capitals by opponents of what they call “gun bans”: The emphasis will be on peaceful protest.
“Let’s freak out the media with such a positive image of the American gun owner that they cannot spin a negative message,” Matthew Piquet, a gun rights supporter from Marysville, said in an e-mail to gun rights supporters that was sent to state media.
Emphasizing that the rally will be a “peaceful protest” — “We will not engage in any negative activities” — Piquet suggested procedures for demonstrators who want to pack their piece, and even suggested dress for the rally.
“Responsible legal carry is permitted and encouraged,” wrote Piquet. “Handguns only. We’re not trying to have a media field day with what looks like a bunch of paranoid hillbillies or crazed militants. Concealed carry is encouraged and permitted ONLY if you have your Washington State CPL.”"
The pro-gun event has drawn criticism from a leader in last Sunday’s march against gun violence in downtown Seattle.
“What are they saying by celebrating the instrument of Martin Luther King’s death on the same weekend we honor his memory?” the Rev. Sandy Brown, senior minister at Seattle First United Methodist Church, asked on his Facebook page.
The “High Noon” pro-gun rally will convene by the Tivoli Fountain in the state capital, at 416 Sid Snyder Ave. N.W. (The street is named for a longtime state senator from southwest Washington.)
“The media will misconstrue our message if we all show up in camouflage or fatigues (see: crazed militants),” Piquet warned. “A nice shirt, slacks, jeans and T-shirts for some, for some a suit and tie.”
And, another admonition: “IF YOU CARRY, YOU WILL KEEP YOUR WEAPON HOLSTERED AT ALL TIMES, even if the Westboro Baptist Church shows up.” (The Kansas-based “church,” really one family, has showed up with “God Hates *censored*” signs at the military funerals of Iraq and Afghanistan war casualties, and once put in an appearance outside Seattle’s St. Mark’s Cathedral.)
