I am new to this forum as it was just brought to my knowledge that it was here. I am on the hunt for some black bears for the first time this upcoming fall. I am more concerned about getting my wife one. I am willing to put in the time to find some good spots on public ground but I would like to find a piece of private ground for my wife to hunt on. I am willing to work for the landowner for access to their ground. I have worked ground and animals in the past. I live on Fort Lewis and would like to find a place within an hours drive of post. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you

The best bear hunting is on public land. Not that private land doesn't have many bears, but if you're talking relatively small parcels of land at low elevation, the only real sure fire method of killing a bear would be with bait. And of course that is illegal in this state.

For your wife, you might check into a guided bear hunt on the Quinault Indian reservation. They hunt over bait, and I've heard success rates are fairly high.

I didn't know what would become available for us I kunderstand I'll be out all day walking a lot but she has never hunted before and may not, for sure not, want to put the foot miles in. Thank you for the info.

Put some miles under your boots this spring and look for areas. Look at maps and figure how far she is willing to hike to hunt.

finding a piece of private there is no real advantage to that..and around here its worse to hunt the private..get in the mts and glass.

Now if it were legal to bait thats a different story

Well the way it sounds is that I will be hunting some public ground. I guess the hunting is a little different everywhere you go. Now I just need to find some areas with easier access for her. I ran across two in TA 13 and one twice in TA22.  They are in there and very few have been taken out.  Get in a good spot, with calls and stand ready.  A good Slef-Climber Tree Stand will help a grat deal.

Bought 22 undeveloped acres about an hour from Fort Lewis. Would like to tempt you into coming out to work on my place. However it is not exactly infested with bears. It was mostly logged about twelve years ago then not replanted. Most of the logs are still laying where they fell. Price dropped out from under the former owners to the point that it would cost more to extract and haul the logs than they were worth.

Have cut my way in through the jungle of volunteer plants and camped there in a few different places. Mostly though being retired, I like to sit in my lawnchair, cooking store bought meat on a fire. What is it and your spouse have in mind? If it is a fair weather armed walk in the woods. Maybe try Montesano,Wa. There is lake Sylvia State park, and Friend's Landing for developed campsites.  There are several Fish & Wildlife preserves in the area. Pit toilet, sign with rules, and parking. Plenty of good restaurants there and in Elma. Saw a herd of Elk grazing in a pasture near Satsop along the highway last week.

Personally have only seen bear hind ends momentarily as they dash away. Maybe three seconds of that before they disappear into the brush.

Am very curious as to what it is you are willing to work for ?

Got on the state webpage to give you a destination that likely would be what you are looking for. Although since it is public access no working necessary. While the state owns what might appear to be a postage stamp of land for this unit. It is one of four. The southern nieghbor is 1400 acres of county land that was once set aside for a nuke plant. Nuke was never finished. The southern neighbor of the nuke plant is over a hundred miles deep and wide of tree farm.
The parking and outhouse is behind an active gravel mine. Wear rubber boots and bring a raincoat.

elbe hills will be your best bet, head out the east gate, take a right go through roy and hang a left on the eatonville cutooff, get to mtn hwy and take a right, fallow that all the way to elbe town, plenty of bear up behind that town, it starts out pretty steep, there are still alot of clearcuts up there that you can kick back and glass
