Toutle Bull permit success
« on: September 20, 2008, 08:13:06 PM »
I got back from my east side elk hunt and after resting and basking in the success of that hunt I went out and called yesterday for a buddy of mine and his wife who drew Toutle Bull permits.  We had an amazing hunt with lots of bulls in close.  We had several bulls under 10 yards, but it was just so thick that no shots presented themselves.  We kept after it and I ended up calling this bull right to Trisha.  She shot the bull at TWO FEET!  The arrow was still attached to her string when the broadhead entered the bull.  It was an incredible hunt.  The bull is an old regressed bull.  He had lost most of his teeth and was missing both ivories.  He probably wouldn't have made it too many more years.

This bull did die just above the road, unfortunately it wasn't a road that we could drive, it's been washed out for 20 years.  It took us 10 hours to get this bull out of this canyon.  It was an absolute mess, thick brush and super steep.  But, it was worth every step for a bull like this and the memories of the hunt!  Billy still has a tag so we'll see what we can do this next week!

Thats a heck of a bull. Lucky man to have a wife that wants to share in the experience.

That's actually my buddies wife.  She is a trooper.  We drag her through some absolute *censored*-holes and she just keeps trudging along.  She's still on cloud 9 with that hunt and having him so close.  Tomorrow we are going to try and get her husband a bull in the Toutle.  We are going back to the same general area.  Going to bed now so we can get an early start at getting way the hell in there.

We got close yesterday on another bull that couldn't bugle.  All he could do was moan at us.  Terrible set up but he came in too fast.  We had a cliff below us and he walked up below the cliff and raked a tree for 20 minutes.  My buddy decided to make a move on him by swinging around once the wind calmed for a minute. Unfortunately the wind only calmed for a minute and when he got within 40 yards of the bull the wind switched and the bull walked off.  We got into a few other bulls, just nothing of size.  If he doesn't get one tomorrow, we are going back up there after the "moaner" bull on Thursday.

Tony-We were about 12 miles in, but the worst part was the steep, extremely brushy hill that we had to pack him up.  Near vertical with impenetrable brush.  We tried the old adage "a quickest way between to points is a straight line" and it backfired.  We would've been better off packing him side hill a ways and tying into a different road system.  Oh well, lesson learned.

My buddy filled his tag on Saturday with a nice 5x5.  I'll get some pictures up when I get them.  He shot his bull at 5 feet, so his wife still beat him!!
