Coons
« on: January 30, 2013, 05:31:53 PM »
Warmer weather has the coons moving again around here. Thought maybe the experienced cage trappers on here might have some suggestions for coon.

What size traps are you using?

Are the store bought cage traps strong enough to hold a big boar?

What baits are you using?

Does the floor need to be covered and how about tarping or otherwise wrapping your traps?

Thanks

Doug

I like to use visual bait, marshmellows, I like one or two big ones hanging from a piece of clothes hanger right over the back of the pan and a few of the multi colored ones scattered around.  I like vanilla wafers as well.  If the skunks are moving either wrap your trap or get it off the ground or you'll have an unpleasant suprise.  If you are no where near farm cats or town then you can use a good fishy bait, but same thing, skunks love fishy baits as well.  I do not cover the bottom of the trap for coons.  Yes the store bought traps will hold a coon.  Most of my coon traps are 12x12x36.

Depends on which store bought trap. Harbor freights won't the doors are to weak . If your going to set along the river be prepared for skunks lol. I've took to wireing them to a tree or stump or setting in a few inches of water. I cover the trap with dead grass and lay a few big sticks over the top, the sticks seem to help keep them off the top of the trap. I'm gonna set a couple cage trap out this weekend for coon.
