Depends on who and where. Even now there are guys turning a profit. During the fur boom mid 70s to 87 there were a lot of guys able to make a good living trapping and even more that showed a profit but not enough for a yearly wage.
Lot of difference in fur prices between different sections of the country. If you want to make money you need to go to a state where the fur is a good price and it is plentiful. Usually some furs are up and some are down and what's up changes. Right now it is rats everyone is crazy for. Couple years ago the focus was on cats and it still is but the rats have kind of surpassed cats. Late 90s it was otter. Early 80s it was coyotes and fox. Generally the farther north you go the better the fur but you can make that up with volume if you have a high population farther south.
