surf perch

ive been wanting to get out and do some surf perch fishing and was wondering what exactly to use for em. or what the set up is? any advice would be great!

Use clam necks, or even raw shrimp.  Set up with a slip system so you can feel the bite.  Study the area you intend to fish and look for any irregularities that would hold fish when the tide is down so at high tide you know where to go.  Have fun and good luck.

i catch them all the time. use 1 to 2 oz with a 24 to 36 in leader with a 2/0 hook.  use clam necks sand shrimp or worms. i use a trout pole with 10 ooound mono alot if guys use 15 or 20 but you dont need it and just cast out. i have caught some real nice ones. some people use suft poles for beach fishig they use a 2 or 3 oz weight that is shaped like a triangle with spike things so the weight catches the sand. use a 24 to 36 inch leaded with 2 hooks on( dropper loop) and use clam necks.  both work great i have caught fish both ways. i like to fish between finger jettys that have a small beach or sandy bottom and fish when the tide is coming in. then i go hit up my seabass and bottom place and fidh there. it makes a great fishing day. pm me if you have any questions.

Make sure if you use clam necks they are taken off before the the clams are dunked in hot water to separate them from the shells.

first pic is my favorite. and 2nd is what i use some times. just depends on what mood i am in and if im fishing for other fish. but the first set up is best just use one swivel put  your weight on( cannon ball is what i like) and run a leader from the swivel. i like to use long leaders i have used 5 to 6 feet leaders before. its all what ya like.

I had luck using a crappie rig which has a couple of wire 'T's on it, tie about 6-8 inches of line to your hook then bait with the clam necks.  I just cut about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch off the last batch I cleaned.  Squid would probably work as well and would stay on better than shrimp IMO.

I was using a 4 oz pyramid sinker and sill had it move sideways in the surf.  You need to have a variety of weight to see what works best.  Chuck it out as far as you can between waves.  The longer the rod, the further the chucking.  I used a 2" diameter piece of pvc cut at an angle on the bottom and about 30" long for a rod holder.  Push it inb as far as you can as close to the surf as you are comfortable.  I like the weight on the bottom so my baits stay off the sand, but at the shallow angle it sits on the beach, maybe they are on the sand anyways.  Disclaimer, I have only surf fished once, but I did catch three and had a couple of other bites.

On exactly what everyones saying. Sinker with 2 foot leader and clam necks. Works great!
Just a few I caught but they were delicious at the campsite!

I like to use sand shrimp but they do cast off easier. Clam necks stay on very well but I get more bites on the shrimp. Just my

have you tryed that strechy clear stuff we call it crap wrap i use it for stergeon fishing and surf perch. it works great

Posted these on a different surf perch thread but here you go. Use 1oz pyramid weight at the end of the line. 12-18" above weight 6" leader with red #2 circle hook bait with clam neck or berkley gul sandshrimp. 12" above that leader ad an additional 6" leader same rig as other. 2 hooks are better than one, and the more bait in the water the better off you are in my experience. 6'6 med action bass rod, 2500 series saltwater reel, 8lb test. Here are a few pics for you.

First or second yeah. I go razor clamming every season though. That was the first time one of the first times I decided to hit the water for perch.

Usually out at copalis beach. Thats where we usually razor clam, then well drive up and down the beach looking for good spots to wade out into. Ill get out as far as I can without water splashing into my waders. Makes for a fun roller coaster to!

All of mine were caught on Mockrocks beach, that's Copalis Rock in the second picture. A bit of a learning curve, the first time out I think I caught 4, its been limits everytime since. Just have to figure out your rig and how far out the perch are (hint: you don't have to cast as far as you think you need to).

Yeah Im starting to notice that, Ill fish one spot about 10 minutes, If I get no nibbles I walk down the beach about 50 yards and try again. Usually will be able to find a school within an hour or so.

the perch are really close in like in 1 to 3 feet of water in some places. the spot i go to if i am going to surf perch fish is the westport jetty and i walk out about 100 feet and cast into the surf and nail them every time. oh i forgot to tell ya used spark plugs work great for weights lol

12 Foot lamiglass I dont use that for my perch though. I use my 8 foot ugly stick.

Me neither lol. Gotta live on the edge though it makes life interesting. Because it was a $190 doller pole and dont feel surf purch justify using it. Plus I hate using it in salt water. Ive ruined too many great poles due to that crap. Its my salmon pole that I usually use upriver where its 80% + fresh water.

gotta live life on the edge man. i use my 200 dollar ultra light for bottom fish some times. i even have used my fly pole with a spinning reel on it because its so sensitive. gotta do what you gotta do. i caught a 12 pound ling on my 4/5 fly pole lol.

ddjj, I will try the stretch tread. I have used it sturgeon fishing but not on the perch.

the strech thred works well just dont tighten it up to  much because it will cut threw the shrimp( i dig my own sand shrimp so its always fresh)

i have to admit something when the bite is good i some times put 5 hooks on at once........ i onlly thoughtthe 2 hook rule  was for fresh water.
