AR safety broken
« on: February 03, 2013, 02:31:06 PM »
So my buddy and I went out yesterday to do some predator hunting and shooting. I loaded the mag and inserted it but did not chamber a round. I had looked at the safety tang and it was set on safe. Well we get to our set up and I chamber a round and recheck my safety. As soon as my tumb hits it it just spins and wont set. I remove the mag and round from the chamber and look to see whats wrong. I pull the whole safety lever out. Actually it practically just fell out. It doesnt look broken. Does anyone know what failed? I cant see what failed or is wrong. Only thing I can see maybe is the detent pin and spring is missing. But don't know if it fell out after I pulled the lever out. Could it just be the detent pin and spring failed?

This is why you always follow safe gun handling. Safeties do fail. Scary to think what accident could have happened.

Has the grip been removed lately? Sounds like the detent is gone.

The detent is gone or the detent spring is broke.

I see on a schematic how it works. So I probably lost the spring and/or detent. Thanks guys. Hopefully these aren't hard to get.

The Safety detent and spring are held in by the grip.  They probably fell out when you removed the old grip.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

The detent and spring are held in place by the grip. So when you pulled the old grip off and did not know this, it probably fell out.

Sorry, Carp!  :chuckle:  If you can't find the parts locally, Midway sells individual AR parts.  The Safety detent pin is slightly different than the other detent pins--it's got a liitle hat-shaped end...

Yeah at least you guys are consistant   :chuckle:  Just got home and checked it out. Yep thats what happened. I didn't know this when I changed the grip. I did find the detent but no spring. The detent is pointed on one end and has a rim on the other. Thanks again.

Eugene Stoner developed a heck of a simplistic yet effective combat rifle, love the AR.  It is like to old trucks that we use to be able to fix in our garage, before all the damn electronics.
It's a TIKKA thing..., you may not understand.

:yeah: A design that's 50 years old, and more popular than ever.  What a legacy!
