.338 VS .50

I had an AR-50 for a very short time. Picked it up with a Nightforce BR scope for $2700, so I couldn't pass it up. It was a great gun, well made, and was beautifully accurate. It just wasn't fun to shoot though. Recoil isn't a problem but the muzzle blast was terrible. It was sold after about 1 month and 200 rounds.

Unless you need an anti-material rifle, get the 338. You'll shoot it more and it will be just as effective for 90% of the shooting you'll likely do.

My vote is for the .338.  Its cheaper, lighter, and has a magazine which means faster follow up shots.  I think the .338 is a more accurate long range round than the .50.  Example 300 WM sniper rifles have to print groups that are much tighter than a 50 sniper rifle to be considered acceptable.

If you plan to carry while hunting, I would recommend the .338 LM.  The AR-50 is heavy to begin with and gets heavier and heavier away from the vehicle.  Most gun cases aren't long enough for the AR-50, so it has an allen screw that separates the butt portion of the stock just behind the pistol grip.  Like said above, the recoil isn't bad.  The blast to the shooter isn't all that, but everything around gets blown around or knocked over.

I have both a 338L ( Custom Rbros rifle) and a Barrett 50BMG. I have also owned 2 of the AR50's. It is a big, cumbersome rifle.The two cartridges don't overlap. For most applications, the 338 is the better option.
 You can load the 50 for around $1.50-$3.50 per round and it does need dedicated reloading gear.
The 338 loads for about the same, less as much specialized gear.
If you want the fire power of the 50, try one of the bull pup styles for more portability. Barrett's 95 and 99. Bluegrass makes the Viper that is also a bull pup.

Im thinking the .338 is the way to go. I could get the gun and scope for the cost of JUST the .50. Now all I gotta do is convince the wife before my birthday.
