.338 VS .50

What would you buy? What are your thoughts for or against these rifles. Specificly the Savage 110 FCP HS and the ArmaLite AR50A1

Depends on what you want them for. If it's for showing people what cool guns you have and you don't care that a trigger pull costs $5, get the .50. The .338 would be a great large game gun.

More or less I'm looking cause I'm worried that we may not be able to get either one of them soon. The .50 has been on "The List" ever since Ronnie Barrett made the first rifle. I'm afraid its just a matter of time, but also its a cool factor.

Either one would make a decent squirrel rifle.

.338 winmag or .338 Lapua?

If the former than this, if the latter then the 50.

FWIW there is a company that makes 50 BMG single shot bolt action uppers that will fit on an AR 15 lower receiver with no modification and they are in the $1500 - $2000 range which is about as cheap as you're gonna find a 50

The Savage is a .338 Lapua. what I like about the .338 is I can reload it with the equipment I already have. the 50 on the other hand is well...You cant get any bigger.

I imagine they'd ban the 50 before they think about banning that Savage .338 Lapua...........so get the 50 now. :twocents:

I agree, if that's what you're worried about. Personally I've never been impressed with the 50 thing, a 338 seems much more reasonable, and functional.

I have a buddy with a single shot 50 and bought all the reloading gear for it. he shoots long range competitions, just getting into it, and loves the gun. 50 reloading gear is not cheap and you have to have specialized gear to do it.competition bullets are $7ea then you reload them. Since i am more of a pragmatist, i'd go with the Savage 338, get the reloading gear and several clips, and invest in good glass. You could be in the savage and good glass for the price of the 50. Aside from stopping APC's i would think the 338 would do almost as much as the 50 if you are reloading.  :twocents:

I've shot both of those rifles.  I'd go with the savage 338.   The rifle that I shot had very little recoil and shot .5 moa with factory Swiss 260 grn ammo.  I was very impressed and am considering one for myself.
