It does do some damage but it's not that bad.

how about 17 hmr

17 hmr will kill a coyote, as long as bullet placement is well done.  In some States, like Michigan, you can only shoot coyotes with a rimfire.  Pelts are not worth much these days, so it's not worth the bother to skin, flesh, and dry a coyote pelt, so I wouldn't be too concerned about the damage your 308 does to them.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

I just went hunting with another member here on the forum.  He said his 308 with soft points and cross body shots was very fur friendly.  Something like 308 hole on entrance side, and only a slightly larger (I think he said like a .338) size hole on the exit.  Not enough time to expand, but can grab both lungs and drop them.  If you message me I'll give you his handle and you can pm him him and ask about it.
I also have a friend who shoots them with a .22 or .17hmr head shots only and within 100yards.  I am totally new at this, but have found that people can get heated on the question of using a .17hmr.  Some say it is unethical and should be illegal and damn whoever tries and it wont kill a coyote.  Others say its great, they kill them at 150 yards with it every day of their life, and anybody who uses bigger is wasting fur.  Do whatever is comfortable for you I think.  Just my  :twocents:

That was me... Good hunting with ya yesterday BTW.

I tend to hunt coyotes with whatever I happen to have ammo for that day... A lot of the time its a .308... I was pleasantly surprised at how fur friendly .308 can be as long as you are shooting shoulder shots, the round is usually traveling fast enough that when it hits, a coyote isn't wide enough to fully expand the bullet out, but still puts them down.  This really is just my observations, and not a scientific test though, and I am sure someone will disagree with me...

If you are really after no holes for fur, I would go .17HMR or .22WMR and call them in within 100yds, if not closer for head shots.  Because I don't do much of anything with them but turn them into bait to bring in more coyotes, I am really not concerned with what I use, as long as it is humane.  Mostly I am using a .25-06 now, which is pretty unfriendly to fur as well.  I am however getting ready to do a AR10 build that I will probably throw into the rotation with the rest of my rifles, so will have the .308 as a choice way more often.

While we're on the subject, that new Winchester Super Magnum Rimfire sure looks good, especially in States that only allow rimfires for Coyotes.  I think I'd still rather have a .17 Hornet.

Yeah it's a pretty cool looking round... Those 25gr rounds are supposed to hit three times harder down range... What's a little dubious is the wind drift claims of half the drift of a 17HMR, which of course is going to happen with a heavier round. I would like to see their tests against the 20gr 17HMR instead of the 17gr. I know because of the speed there will be less drift, but where does cost and difficulties of a new round eclipse the 1/2 MOA that you gain. While cool looking, I am kind of waiting on reports from the field before really making up my mind on it.
