elk subspecies?
« on: February 06, 2013, 06:24:47 PM »
I hear people talk about Roosevelt elk a lot. Are there other elk in Washington? Ove heard blues elk as well, though I assume this is just a reference to a region.  Can anybody help me out with this? I plan on hunting sw wa this year. What type of elk live there in winter?

:chuckle: Yes, blues elk are of the rarest species of elk  :chuckle: Just kidding, just a location.

We also have Rocky Mountain elk.

Roosevelt elk are westside, and Rocky Mountain elk are eastside.....

Rocky Mountain elk, Roosevelt elk, and Tule elk. You will be hunting Roosevelt more than likely. Roosevelt have bigger bodies (unless they have hoof rot  :bash: ) but Rocky mountain elk generally grow bigger antlers

rocky mountain elk are basically east of the mountains. Roosevelts are west of i-5. there some tule elk in California as well. the area you will be hunting has just roosevelts.   this is just a general idea, not legal boundaries for any record books
you cant eat the horns, but backstraps look like crap on my wall!!!!

Ok, thank you. Is this kind of like blacktail deer, they are limited to western wa and western Oregon? And the rest of the country hunts Rocky mountain elk?

There are also roosevelts on Vancouver island..  But mostly in western wa, western oregon.. There are rumors that the manitoban elk might not be extinct but I doubt that.. Man I wish the irish elk was still around
