Wyoming Elk Unit 40

Me and a buddy have been drawn for Unit 40 type 9 in Wyoming, anyone out there been to the unit or have any advise? We decided to cash in now and have a chance to build points before we're too old to chase elk, drew it with a combined 4.5 pts...thanks in advance!

Get out there at least once, if you can and go find the areas. I know of a couple guides that will set drop camps back in the woods and have near 100% success rates. Most people out there, during rifle season, road hunt. I love the area and have hunted unit 39 last year with my buddy. Great time, but like anything, get out there and burn some rubber. Good luck!

Yeah unfortunately I won't be able to get out there until a week before the season starts. ATV, mt. bike, boots whatever it takes to scout as much as possibly everyday until the season starts, also some night ops to hopefully get some answers to location bugles...can't wait!

I too have only hunted 39, a couple times and 10-15 years ago.
And I agree with what GU said, most of what you will find are road hunters with WY plates. Lots of north central US plates, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc. like this area. The non-res hunters will get off the road a little bit. Doesn't take too much hiking to get away from peeps and have a good hunt all to yourselves.
You going to try and draw a Region R deer tag too? If you and your hunting partner have even 1 point, you should be a lock to pull a tag in the regular draw. No need to pay the extra coin for the Special.
There are some huge muley's that hang out in R and in what are the 38/39/40 elk area hunt numbers.
Good luck.............jealous!!

No, just elk. I think we'll have our hands full with just the two of us trying to take down some 300"s bulls!!!

The people that have had the best success from what I've seen/talked to, have been the ones who aren't camped on the road, as with anywhere you hunt. Most of the non-residents who are hunting are from road (I have no idea why). Anyways, good luck, and I hope you are successful (whatever your definition of success may be). Have fun and stay safe!

Well I'd like to hold out for a 270-300" bull but it will depend on what I see when I get into the unit, the season is the whole month of Sept. so...also won't be doing any road hunting, usually hunt the mountains in the Northeast of WA so I'm used to going in deep and steep.

Hey all, sorry for the late response, been busy building/promoting an offroad event.
Me and my buddy had Type 9 archery only tags. First off I should have researched the unit more. Dividing the unit North/South is an almost un-interupted section of rimrock. This made hunting very challenging. We opted for the top side and covered approx. 60% of the unit. We only ran into other hunter's a handful of times which was nice. We also had ATV's. Most of the unit is accessible by ATV. We put approx. 900 miles in 18 days on the ATV's. I would saw we averaged 7 miles a day onfoot. This unit is better suited to the late hunts, it is a migratory area that doesn't see alot of elk in September. We saw one bull that was 340-360" range, also heard of one that was 380" taken out of the far West edge of the unit. Other than that there wasn't alot of bulls being taken, talking with people we saw including Fish and Game. The unit is wicked steep in the middle, losing elevation chasing elk isn't fun.
