Help pricing firearms for sale?
« on: February 24, 2013, 12:36:17 AM »
I'm wanting to clear out the gun safes a bit, but really don't know how to price stuff fairly to sell.

Anybody do this for a hobby or have any hints on how to do it or where to turn for help?

Also, I have one collector's item of a rifle:   a BAR in 7MM Rem Mag that was a RMEF Banquet rifle about 20 years ago.   Incredible gold inlay work on both sides of the flat receiver (6-point bulls sparring on one side, bull leading harem into aspens o the other side).   Never shot.   Stored properly in silicone sock in humidity controlled safe so it's 100%.

How in the world do you price something like that?

Thanks,

Dan

There is no way in heck that I could help you with the RMEF rifle, good luck! You could auction it off, though.

The way I get an idea for gun value is to go to an auction site like gunbroker.com and see what similar guns are going for. Another good site for comparing but on a lesser scale would be seattleguns.net

Other than that, I do not know. I once a had one of those books on gun values but they change year to year so it just seemed easier, for me, to check online sources.

Looking on line is one way, just remember that sites like gunbroker have a very wide range of prices....of which most are high.  You can get a Blue Book of Gun Value and that will help as well.  The key to pricing your firearms is knowing exactly what you have.  I have found a lot of deals on firearms that people are selling when they didn't know exactly what they had.  Research what you have, model, year of production, accessories, etc....then look at it's overall condition.  Most used rifles will fall in the 85-95% range, with that being said an 85% gun is worth substantially less than even a 90% gun and so on....

Also the market will play a huge role in what you can get for a gun.  A clear example of this is, in today's markets AR 15's are going for 110-150% of new value.  Two months before rifle season...modern hunting rifles in desired calibers will fetch more than they will immediately following the season.  Having a good feel for the market is really important.

Lastly, if you are looking for cash fast....you will in general take a hit on the actual value.  This is kinda hard, cause if you consign it at a local store you will pay fees.  I generally will find a fair price and then entertain offers.  If it valued to high people will just look and will not even offer.

Good Luck and if you need specific help with a firearm PM me.  I will at least let you know what the Blue Book of Gun Values says.

Cheers

Johnny

Keep an eye on the auction sites. Watch the SALE prices.....not the ASKING price. Some guns sit there for years due to owners in denial.

Dan  -  I run market values on ammo, guns, and other things almost daily trying to see where the trends are.  Gunbroker.com is the best site as it seems to be the most used and most encompassed.    I search for the item and try to find 10 that have sold over the last month.  Throw out the highest price and the lowest price and then average the remaining 8 to get an idea of what the market will bear at the moment.

If you want, PM me what you have and I can get a rough idea for you.

You could look into a reputable auction outfit for that BAR.  :twocents:
times before with just leather, wool and cotton.

Gunbroker.com

Gunsamerica.com

The blue book of gun value has prices for different grades of the BAR.  It mentions a few high grade models that have gold inlays and engravings of wildlife seens.  I think that would also give you a good starting point.
