winter mortality

This has been a long winter in the NE corner. It has not been real cold and has not had a unusual amount of snow, but, we have had snow on the ground for a long time. I saw a dead fawn on the ice of Eloika lake yesterday that was not there Saturday. We also saw a very stressed fawn along the road leading into the lake. It was standing under a tree all humped up. There are some open south slopes showing in some areas, but there is still a substantial amount of snow under the trees. Monday night we were into the mid teens at night and mid 20's right now. There is going to be some winter mortality how bad is yet to be known.

Deer in the Methow are looking good.

Looking normal here.......still seeing plenty of does and yearlings, and saw 3 pretty certain of the big boys that hang in the area on a south facer just above the house.....got fairly close with out them knowing and had a good look...all three large body, great shape.

Looked pretty good around Lake Roosevelt this past weekend.  Saw a good number of deer and most seemed to be in good shape for this time of year.  Snow was pretty much on and off this winter without the big accumulations that hang around and crust over.

Deer in my area look fine, patches of bare ground. March is an important month, hopefully it greens up early.

To my understanding, it's been a pretty mild winter state wide. Temps above normal for the most part and not a lot of snow pack either. With the heavy rains late fall just before the snow covered everything up, I'd say we've got a head start to a good spring green up. And from the way the weather is lately, a wet spring is on it's way.

Deer look great in Chelan, Douglas, and Okanogan counties, at least the few hundred I've seen do.

Even in mild years there is winter kill.
