Mineral sites and effectiveness
« on: March 05, 2013, 08:38:59 AM »
Anyone have a particular product they like as far as minerals go? I set up multiple mineral sites, but dont hunt over them. I just like to think Im contributing to antler development.  I use deer cocaine in liquid form, and some bucks go so far as to pee and defecate on the sites. They really seem to like it.  I have used salt blocks in the past, but they seem to receive a lot less attention.  The blocks last all year but I get a tenth of the activity that the deer cain does. Most of my mineral sites hit peak usage in july, tapering off to nothing by november.  Anyone have any observations of their own?

I don't think you can go wrong with the big blocks from the feed store with the mixed mineral. They are cheep and will break down and soak into the ground nicely over time.

I use 50# bags of trace minerals. They are about $8 a bag.Deer and elk love it. I think it works better then the blocks.

Blocks and bags are cheap, but the spendy stuff seems to have more appeal to the deer and elk.  Maybe they appreciate the extra cost  :chuckle:  Buck jam isnt really a mineral but they love it when poured over the blocks.  Sweet and salty.

The deer and moose camp out on this.  I used it in the South and continue to order and use it out here in Washington.

The deer and elk love the $8 minerals ;D;D. Check out my trail cam thread especially the videos. I only put it out in the spring and summer so the fall and winter pictures there isn't  any. You can definitely tell the difference.

You can get good results with any of it, maybe most importantly, once you start, keep it going ...........

Grundy-  Is that $8 mineral something you're getting at the feed store?  Do you just dump the bag on the ground or turn it into the soil?

With the bag stuff I just pour it on the ground....its soaks in and the deer and critters will literally lick and eat the dirt. I've also poured onto logs and stumps....once soaked they will like and eat at it.

I just found this recipe off the internet. Seems pretty inexpensive and makes 200lbs. Any thoughts? The Ingredients

Purchase one 50-pound bag of dicalcium phosphate from your local feed store for around $11. Dicalcium phosphate helps in food digestion and weight gain. The second ingredient is trace mineral salt. Find the salt without medications and purchase two 50-pound bags for around $5 per bag. The final ingredient is stock salt, or ice cream salt. One 50-pound bag will cost around $2. The salts help to attract the deer and keep the deer coming to the attractant. It also provides trace minerals like magnesium and potassium that aid in antler growth.

Preparation

Mix all four bags for a total of 200 pounds of mineral attractant in a large barrel and use a small coffee can to spread it over stumps and other vegetation. Dig a hole about 6 inches deep and mix the mineral mixture into the soil. Put up a trail camera nearby to track deer movement. Replace about every four to six months or as necessary based on the deer herd.
