Couple Oregon Questions
« on: March 13, 2013, 08:32:56 PM »
My dad and I have decided to hunt archery elk in Oregon this year. We are going to put in for a special permit in the unit that he now lives very close to and if we don't get drawn, we are going to hunt the general archery season. My question is  if we don't get drawn for the tag, do we have buy specific weapon tag like we do in Washington or is it like Montana where you buy an elk tag and you can hunt with bow, rifle or muzzy? I tried reading the regs but couldn't find that information where I was confident in it.

Since my dad is a resident now, we are going to put in separate since from what I read, they have much better odds. I would be totally fine with him drawing and me not and just being his caller and packer. Then I would just hunt the general season and see if I could get lucky as well.

You have to buy a weapon specific tag. Good luck with the draw!

I thought that was the case but my old man thought it was like Montana. Thanks for the clarification.

If you don't draw, there are a TON of OTC elk opportunities with the bow.  And unlike WA, you don't have to pick East or West.

The only issue is that we are looking for a rocky mtn elk hunt and not rosies. Much of eastern oregon is draw only for elk and that is the terrain and species we want to go after.

Much of eastern OR is not draw only for bow. Only 4 or 5 units are draw.

There is some PRIME elk country in a ton of the Eastside OTC areas.  Check out 46, one of my personal favorites.  Caters to the backcountry hunter and some incredible country and bulls.

In more recent season's we've had much better luck sitting at wallows or watering holes and not touching the calls. :twocents:

I will do that! We are planning on getting a room or setting up a base camp and then packing in for a couple days in pup tents then coming back to clean up and heading back out. Have you had better luck earlier in the season or later? Late August seems pretty darn early and hot to be out there unless we found a great wallow.
