Who here is a Hunter Safety Instructor?
« on: March 14, 2013, 02:47:44 PM »
I'd like to talk to someone that is a current instructor.
I'd like to help out with a class in the south end.  Thinking Tacoma Sportsmans Club or another south end class.
Thanks

You have to be a certified instructor to assist, I believe. Go to the DFW Website HE section and contact Dan Boes. He can set you up with that.

You do not need to be a certified instructor to assist.  You can be a volunteer.  There is a form that volunteers need to fill out, but they don't need to be a certified instructor.

I started teaching hunter safety as a volunteer.  That was at least 5 years ago.  No you do not need to be certified.  I'm in Whatcom County.

To instruct in a WDFW course you do need to be certified. To assist as a volunteer you do not.

From the policy manual:

Authorization to Teach
Policy: Only active, certified instructors in good standing have the authority to teach Hunter Education anywhere within Washington State.

If you are going to volunteer, you should just sign up to be an instructor.  In addition to helping out the kids and fostering the next generation of hunters, you also learn a lot from your fellow instructors and students, and Improve public speaking skills.  There are some cool perks for draws and manufacturers discounts at places like Leupold and Savage Arms!

It does not take that much time to do and we could use more instructors in this State.
