Carp fishing....near Snohomish county

So.....was thinking that it would be fun to take my son for some carp fishing and generate some crab bait. Anyone know a close place for that near Lake Stevens or the general snohomish county.

  Many years ago we tried some freshwater trash fish for crab bait (Suckers & carp).  Did not do very well at all with them.  What I'm saying is you may be disappointed with what they produce.

Anything they're not used to eating usually has good results. Chicken, Lasagna in a chum bag, Small children. You know... The usual

Launch in Kenmore once the water starts warming up and hit the shallows around the mouth of the slough.....plenty of other species to be easily caught at the same time in the same general area with slightly different gear.

If you want some squawfish....oops....I mean Northern Pikeminnow for crab bait....I can probly hook you up around June. We have given it to friends and they say it works great for crab. We keep saying we are going to give crabbing a try and we never make it happen.

I use to see lots of 30+ pounders there. They come close to shore to spawn. There are a sh-t load in greenlake to. I was told to use wonder bread and corn meal. roll in a ball around the hook 12" leader with a swivel,egg sinker,bobber, and also place a bobber stop 15-20 ft up the line. You want the sinker to hit bottom and the bobber on the surfice with extra line before the stop. this gives the carp time to eat and run to set the hook. This is what I was told by the guys at greenlake many years ago. Good luck

Green Lake carp was my favorite fishery every year until i moved. All you need is corn, that is it. Toss a handful out, cast 2 corn kernels on a small single egg hook. Then wait, and keep your bail open 
 
Right now is prime time on the lake. Pre spawn right now and those carp are feeding like crazy.

Carp may or may not be good for crab pots, BUT is is very good catfish bait.  We slayed them with small fillets of carp on the Palouse last year.

Corn is a good bait as stated above. Worms work good. Google carp bait and you will get all the recipes you could ever want. Corn flakes is usually the base then people add molasis, honey, jams.......you name it. I can't help you on this side of the state but on the east side, they are everywhere.

Here are a few recipes to get you started.


Premium Carp Bait Recipe
Ingredients:
1 can creamed corn (blended)
2 Tbsps sugar
2 cps corn meal
1 cup Corn Flakes crumbs
1 Tbsp of corn starch
Mix corn meal and corn starch in a bowl and set aside.

Preparation:
Heat blended cream corn to bubbling, turn down to simmer, add sugar and disolve, slowly add corn
meal mix until you get a thick paste, remove from heat and cool 5 minutes.  Put in a large bowl and
add 1 cup of Corn Flakes Crumbs (found in baking section of supermarket) mix thoughouly, and wah
lah.....premium corn dough ball.  No need to refrigerate if using right away.  May refrigerate unused
portion but warm to room temperature before using.

Catfish/Carp Corn Bait
Ingredients:
Can of whole corn
Vanilla extract

Preparation:
Drain the water from the can of corn, and leave only about 5 percent water in the can.
Pour enough vanilla in the can until the corn turns a brownish-yellow color (use your own judgement).
Shake the can, and let the vanilla absorb into the corn.
Depending on your hook, I personally use a #2 treble hook, you should be able to slide on about 4 or
5 good sized pieces of corn.

Anise Carp Bait
Ingredients:
7 slices white bread-remove crusts
1 raw egg
1 raw carrot-shaved
1 cap anise
flour

Preparation:
Break up bread into 2 inch pieces
Add egg, carrot, and anise
Hand mix
Refrigerate overnight
Next day, lightly flour
Make small dough balls (keep in plastic bag sealed to prevent drying out).

Simple Dough Bait
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1 cup corn meal
1 cup water
Vanilla extract (as much as desired)

Preparation:
Put the corn meal and flour into a bowl.
Put the water into a pot and add as much vanilla flavor as you want.
After the water begins to boil add mixture of flour and corn meal, let absorb the water then take the
pot off the heat.
Knead and mush the mixture until dough is thick enough to stay on your hook.
Put into a Ziploc baggie after it cools.

Sure Shot Carp Bait
Ingredients:
Wheaties
vanilla extract
wheat germ
banana
whole corn
sugar

Preparation:
Put Wheaties in large type bowl several handfuls
Add banana combine with Wheaties until it begins to stick together then add vanilla extract
Add in wheat germ, then corn
Put a pinch of sugar in also
Mix all together until you get sticky type results.

Carp make fair human food also.  I used to fish them in the Milwaukee River back in WI in the spring while the water was cold.  I would drift doughball and/or nightcrawlers through the holes in the river (much as you would for trout) with a flyrod.  Small under 5lb would would jump and fight like the best game fish, larger ones would dog it out like a real tough guy.

When you fillet them remove the brown strip under the skin(tastes bad) and bake them with butter and paprika, while boney they have great texture and flavor.  They were imported here as a food fish and are eaten all over the world.  They are excellent smoked also.
