Youth hunt colville/kettle falls area
« on: March 24, 2013, 07:36:15 PM »
I am planning on taking my 11 year old brother and possibly a 13 year old family friend over for the youth hunt this year. I have never been in the northeast for turkey hunting before, only the dayton area. The youth hunt is the only time i will be able to take him out this year due to archery shoots getting in the way. He has had a rough couple years hunting deer and turkeys and we really want to get him some success. Neither of them have killed a gobbler yet. Is there any advice you guys could give on hunting the youth season over there? Is the snow level a problem? Are birds really henned up? We have a dnr and blm map and there is quite a bit of public land that looks like it should hold birds. We plan to head over on the 4th. And get a day of scouting in and hopefully find a few birds for the 6th. Does anyone know if there are farmers and locals that allow hunting on their property? A friend of ours told us that the locals hate turkeys over there. Thanks :)

You can investigate Chewelah.  Not sure what the snow will be like, but you might find out from someone on here that lives there, or contact the chamber of commerce there.  Look for farm to market rd off of 395 and head west. Follow that to wrights vlly rd and to red marble rd.  Anywhere in there you should be able to find birds, and knock on land owner doors.  If you dont have any luck with land owners give me a shout and I will steer you further.

That area should be a good place to start. Killed my first turkey around there about 15 years ago.

If they can hike a little, look for south facing hills in that area they will hold birds.  Good luck I hope get them some birds.
