NM IBEX
« on: October 03, 2008, 01:17:05 PM »
Anyone ever hunt them?

Is it as hard as they say?

They say the archery hunt is stupid? Is it?

Inquiring minds want to know.......

Have never done it, but think that I will start applying next year for the muzzleloader tag.  I know the archery tag is the easiest to draw, followed by the muzzleloader and rifle.  But you have just as good of a chance drawing the rifle tag as you do winning the lottery.  Everything that I have read is the archery hunt is pretty hard.  I have read a few times guys setting up blinds in the rocks and waiting with archery gear.  Also seems like most of what I have read, most of the guys were archery hunting.  Most likely because they are the easiest to draw.

I heard that the area they live is brutal/ seriously dangerous with rock slides and cliff's and that the IBEX is like as cracked out whitetail, with a billy goats feet and antelope eyes as far as getting close   :o

As hardcore of an archery hunter as I am, I didn't think I could do it.

Pat Meitin has bowhunted them a couple times, I believe.  My buddy in CO is good friends with him.  I will give him a call and see what I can dig up.

They have Gemsbok (Oryx) too and from what I remember, those tags are easier to draw.  Anyone who's hunted Africa will agree that they are one of the most beautiful game animals on earth.

Eyeballing it.  Tempting as all get out.  Was going to bail with the fees up font, but darn that might be fun.  Still too chicken to try it with a bow.

I have been down there.  If you are not a bad ass hunter don't bother.  Even with rifle your chance are slim unless you can shoot 500 yds.  The tag is a little over $1600.  Out of 100 archery permit this year only 2 or three people stuck one.  A guy down there asked my dad how much money he paid for the tag.  He said $1600.  The guy said you could have gave me $1600 buck and I would have beat you with a stick.  Here is a pic.
