lingcod rod?
« on: April 06, 2013, 09:53:02 PM »
I plan on doing a bit of ling fishing this year in the sound and would like to build a rod for this purpose. It would be mostly for live bait and some jigging. Glass or graphite? Any reccomendations on length lure weight action and line rating? Would this rod work for rock fish and lings at Westport also? I don't do much saltwater fishing so I'm not really up to speed on rods for bottom fish.

thanks for the suggestion!

doing a little research im looking at these two blanks. what do you guys think? the 2-6oz or the 1-5oz? although i am concerned about the Light and medium light ratings. these are graphite butt glass tip rods.

Consider an Ugly Stick in 7'-8'6" lengths. They're durable and affordable. Whether in a spinning or baitcasting set up they will last a long time and won't break the bank. With braided line and heavy duty mono leader you should be able to wrench them up off the bottom no problem. Most of my lings come off halibut gear but when I fish in shore that is my typical set up.    :twocents:

I 2nd the Trevala rods to design yours after..  I use one that can handle up to 24 ounce jigs and normally jig atleast 12 ounce.  I like the shorter rod too for jigging (6 foot).  I experimented with a couple of them this year to see how they performed and hooked into an oversized Sturgeon.  That was a 10-30lb rod in Medium power and fast top.  Rod handled great, plenty of back bone for the light rod and handle did not bend...   I did get two of the XXH for Halibut and Florida trip for sharks -will let you know how they performed on bigger fish.   Would love to have custom rod made, as I like a smaller blank and bigger handle due to having hand problems (Carpal tunnel)

The TIGER rods are just too heavy for all day jigging.  I like them or Sturgeon and putting in a rod holder but not jigging.  The Ugly Stick jigging rods are weaker in the handle area.  I got three different Ugly stick jigging rods in different weights and every one of them the weak points are in the handle...  They are now BOAT rods for others to utilize....

Would love to see what you make, do you make custom rods for sale too or self fun?

My thoughts to consider-

Lings in the Sound- in the South Sound that usually means shallower/medium depths. you will likely want a lighter rod than for offshore depths. Its no fun fishing with a broomstick- especially when you don't need it. 4-8 ounces would be typical- maybe up to 12 if the tides running and its windy.
Times I charter fished for lings at Westport were not super deep water situations either.

Jigging with a longish (8ft +/-) rod is very tiresome. Your correct in thinking about 6-7 feet.

The Trevala rods are awesome. I'm thinking about picking up 2 or 4 just for fishing ling and butts. Wish I had purchased them a few years ago when a buddy first told me about them. The prices have went way up.

Is the taste of the bait worth the sting of the hook twice?

Are you using these rods in the sound? they sound a bit heavy, but then again i dont know much. :chuckle: i posted some pics of a rattlesnake skin inlay rod i built http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,120023.0.html and am just waiting on a few guides for my next rod to be complete. it has silver, white, blue, and baby blue marbled accents around the split grip handle. ill post pics when its done, it came out pretty good. im just making the rods for myself and some friends right now, would like to start a business eventually.

No, I do not fish the sound....  So the others would be heavy for that but the Medium light rod  10-30lb with fast tip would be awesome for that..  Maybe on 6-8ounces jigs...  They have numerous ones at Sportco to take a look at to see what you want to build.  One day would like to make some for just the satisfaction of having built them....

Here is that same rod on a 7 foot Oversized Sturgeon, you tell me if it has some back bone to handle bigger fish, but light enough with a sensitive tip...  I am seriously hooked on those light tuff rods.

The handles are not line grooved at all, where every Ugly stick Tiger rod and Jigging rods I have are well grooved, meaning one thing, handle is bending on fish...   I won't change out my Tiger sticks for Sturgeon, especially OS stuff, but have and am for other bottom fish 100%...

I agree, short and fast, fast, fast.  I don't remember what my ling rod is, I haven't used it in about 3 years, but it's only about 5 ft.
I wouldn't go over 6'; the other thing I found to be a huge help is using an accurate line counter reel and braided line.  I've been down 80 plus feet and could feel every little bump with the braid; also the braid is thinner and has less drag in the current, it also doesn't stretch so setting the hook and hauling 'em up from 40-80 feet is easier.   The combination of line counter reel and depth finder help you to stay on top of the fish and out of the rocks.
