Youth Season... 2 out of 3 ain't bad...
« on: April 07, 2013, 10:32:46 PM »
Just got back from taking my son and two friends (the friends had never turkey hunted before) out for the Youth Hunt. Being our first year hunting turkey's in Washington, I was happy with the results especially given the nasty weather in the NE. My son shot his bird the first morning, while I was with the other two boys trying to get theirs. He's been having some knee and ankle problems all spring (from track practice/meets) so he set up with the father of the two boys I was with and called in a group of jakes and shot one. He was pretty happy with himself for making it happen on his own. He has killed several turkey's, but knew he was going to have a hard time hiking the way he normally does, and wanted me to spend time working to get his friends on some birds, so he hunted on his own (the father of his friends sat with him). He sayed he decided a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush... when your knees and ankel are killing you. I was proud of his attitude. I hunted hard all day and couldn't get one for the other two boys. Today it was POURING rain all day. But the wind was down a bunch and the birds gobbled pretty good. We got this nice 2 year old for the Older friend (his first bird). It looks like a drowned rat after rolling in the wet brush. Unfortunately we were unable to get one for the younger brother. I promised to take him out during the regular season.

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  :o He is 15... what can I say? Actually, having shot his bird the first day, he stayed at camp... his mama didn't raise any fools! But, he packed up most of our gear for the trip home... earning brownie points from dad big time!
