Diagphram question
« on: April 11, 2013, 02:55:46 PM »
I was curious, do you use different diaphragms for different calls? I know there are tonal and raspy differences. I was wondering if you use one for exclusively doing purrs and use another for yelps as an example. I'm new to turkey hunting and bought a bunch of diaphragms to try out. I find that I can do certain calls and not other calls on one diaphragm and on another I can do the ones I can't do on the other but can't do anything else.

Yes and No.

In my opinion all calls should be able to yelp and cluck.  They will sound any where from crisp and clean to very raspy.

For cutting you want a call with a lot of backbone (most of the time these calls are the calls that require a lot of air for yelps).  Otherwise the lighter calls will break over and have a squeaky cut.

For purring your lighter calls will be easier to purr on.  It can still be done on all calls but the heavier and tighter calls produce a "louder" purr.

Other specific uses:  louder calls for mid day locating.  Quiet calls when calling on the roost.
