Arizona Archery 6B tag

Hi everyone. Found out my 15 year old son and I drew our 3rd choice Arizona tag, Archery Cow, for unit 6B. This is his first Elk bow hunt, he has killed one cow with a gun, so I am actually ok with the cow tag. It will be a great chance for him to get in the back country a bit with his bow, while we are still building points for a bull hunt in the future. I really like the the country in 6B and have a cousin in Sedona, so it should be fun.

Anybody with any tips for hunting cows in 6B with a bow, I'd love to hear them. I am starting more research now. I'd kind of like to back pack in a ways somewhere, and camp for a week with him. I know there are a lot of roaded areas, but they closed a bunch of those in the past couple years.

I suggest you find out some guides for the area and give them a call. Tell them you want to do a DIY cow hunt with your kid and see if they have any suggestions. I contacted some guides for the area of my bull tag and they were very helpful even gave names of past hunters in the area.

I've lived in Flagstaff the last 3.5 years so I know the area fairly well. 6B is a pretty cool unit because you have the choice of either hunting in the pines (above the mogollon rim/Sedona) and down in the junipers/pinyon (pretty much everything below the rim). Finding a place a ways away from roads can be difficult. They did "close" several of the roads last year when the new Travel Management Rule went into effect, but most of the roads are not gated and most people will drive down them anyways. If I were going to camp for a week to try to get away from people I would head along the eastern rim of Sycamore canyon north of the rim (assuming the snow hasn't pushed the elk into the canyon). I have hunted 7 before and there are plenty of elk.  Killing a cow should be fairly easy.

I lived in that area for 20+years, and if you go the mogollon rim road like chadH said, you will jump cow elk just driving in... you only need to hike in as far as it is fun for you guys, because elk are all over. My bro in law has a sept bull tag, and my father in law has a cow tag same area.
A few ideas for ya:
Chat with Dale at wild heritage taxidermy, look it up, he is in the area and loves helpin folks.
Also, check out cousewhitetail.com, a forum like hunt wa... filter to elk and AZ folks are friendly folks for the most part.
