Let's not forget Clockumelk's cause
« on: April 28, 2013, 06:08:16 AM »
Perhaps now would be a good time for everyone to revisit this thread:

http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,87738.0.html

and remember what our colleague tried to accomplish.

I spent part of Sunday morning going through this.  It's an interesting bit of research he did.

Thought some of you new guys to the forum might like to see this.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

I also recall reading his post on the Colockum Elk Heard! I recently looked at the harvest report from last year as I put in for the cow permit and did not get drawn for it. I am planning to put in for that tag as well as the Peaches Ridge Quality Tag for Archery! I did notice that out of the 50 permits given in this unit for cows that only 13 or so actually harvested a cow. Bull to cow ratio is not looking good, and better management is needed to allow this heard to flourish!  :yike: :yike: Last Year 71 cows were harvested and 284 antlered elk were harvested. Too many cows in the heard with a poor Bull to Cow ratio, and poor harvest last year so they increased the permits form 50 to 140! Hope that I can get drawn for the cow tag to Honor 'Colockumelk' for the passion he had for this elk heard and for giving his life for all of us to live in peace each and every night!

He had a great way of writing on the subject. He knew what he was talking about. Too bad I can not write as good as he did. We need to fix it. 284 antlered where harvested? wow how many spikes. Not many branched antler permits?

For GMU 328 & 329 that covers the Colockum area, the 284 antlered were all Spikes!!

This is really tough for me to read, knowing he will never participate in a discussion again, he was able to bring many sides to the table, he made it more public, he did lots of research and that is how we first became friends, we were both doing elk research I was studying the hoof rot situation and he the colockum situation....we were exchanging contacts and research information, and he became my friend.  I miss him terribly when I come on here.  Lets keep the ball rolling and not let the state off the hook for their bad management decisions.

I thought he had some great ideas. I remember butting heads with him over more locked gates to restrict road access. All I wanted was to ride green dots and not see gates. Deep down, I always knew he was right, the gates would do a lot to keep elk safe in the off season. Those discussions are just warm memories now. For Aaron's sake, I hope we can get something done to accommodate the elk and legal riders.

We need to make this a priority, it seems that this was one of Aaron's greatest passions.  :twocents:
