Montana Gophers
« on: May 01, 2013, 07:30:39 AM »
Made my annual Montana trek for gopher huntin. Sat. evening when I arrived made it out to the pasture and bagged 23 b4 they went under. Sun morning the hunt (work) began I got 160, the weather was kind of against me windy. Mon. the weather was really tough blowing 40-50 mph snowing I managed to bag 55. My best take was 2 years ago I got 351 in one day. Usually there are red fox following me around picking up the used gophers not so this time, just Bald eagle ravens and magpies. Rifle of choice were Ruger 7717 Leupold 4.5-14, Kimber 22 magnum Redfield 4-12 and Ruger 7722 stainless 3-9 Leupold with Remington yellow jackets. Shots ranged from 10 yards to 175. I took some cross wind shots with the 22 mag @ 80 yards and with the wind blowing 40 and holding right on the shot was wide left by a foot and a half.

Some of my fondest memories is doing just that.  I loved it as a kid.  Haven't done much of it in the last 10+ years.  Need to take my kids over there.  Were you hunting public land or a private spot you got?
