hunting in noisy areas?
« on: May 06, 2013, 09:19:25 AM »
This weekend I was out in a new area. Always windy, all sign was near a big creek and river, also the road..... Checkerboard area with private / public land. Fairly open ground cept around the water. What im wondering is what is the best way to hunt this? I never heard a gobble but know they are their. Maybe I needa be on top of them to hear them? Use louder calls? Dekes out in the fields where can be seen from far(problem is the road being so close most times anyone driving by can see).

Have you been there late evening and early morning? Usually the wind calms down during those parts of the day. And if it's still windy just find the draws that are blocked from the wind and see if you can hear any birds. I hunt an area that has a lot of natural wind Channels and this works for me. Good luck!

Same thing with me abd the wind at the start of the season, but early morning the birds were flying down and going to the top of the ridge ... the toms had an area with a small depression in open timber where they were protected from the wind and they were just hanging out and not making a sound.  They know where these places are ... it was only a few hundred yards from their roost tree and the hens were splitting off and nesting at the bottom of the ridge in the thicker stuff near the creek.   So if I positioned myself between where they were just hanging out in their strutting zone depression and the hens nesting area and the roost trees and called fairly softly and sparingly, it would eventually get their curiosity and sex drive going enough to make them come in and take a look.

Well at least a 5 mph wind all the time, but like I said itsa new area to me so I think my biggest problem is finding those spots with less wind or strut zones etc...
