Never a dull moment at the boat ramp....
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:42:39 AM »
So, yesterday, I get a call from an elderly neighbor (yep Smossy's girl, I used elderly, since he's pushing 80   :chuckle: ), I missed the phone so finished up a couple of things and then hopped on the golf cart to go over to his house.  I figured he needed help getting his 14' "dinghy" into the water.  As I turn the cart around, another neighbor drops him off in the driveway.  Turns out he needs me and my truck to pull his truck and 24' Bayliner up a hill.  He got 2/3 of the way up one of our small hills and the boat dragged his truck backwards back down the hill about 80 yards until the trailer wheels stopped on the edge of a big ditch.   :yike:

I pull him to the top and stop to unhook his truck.  He asked me to follow him to the ramp so I could hook on again as he was afraid the boat would drag him down the ramp into the water.  Well, launching his boat went fine.  He asked if I would take his boat around the island to the dock, no problem.  Earlier , he had dropped the dinghy at the ramp, but now it was floating out in the bay.  He heads off, so I motored over to the dinghy, but it is not his, just another blue one.  It is attached to a mooring buoy that is flipped and tangled, so I righted it and untangled it, then went looking for the correct one.  Well, I find it about a half mile away so inch in to shore and get it off the beach.  I finally motor around to the dock and the neighbor that dropped this gentleman off at my house is there to give me a ride to my truck.

When we launched earlier, there was also another neighbor's 28' or so footer on a trailer behind an old pickup, seemed like a small truck for this six-wheeled trailer and boat.....

As we come down the road we turn the corner above the ramp to see that they had launched the big boat... and trailer... and TRUCK, into the bay.    :yike:   :bdid:

Too bad I had to look for that dinghy or I might have been there in time to help.  As we approached, I could see three people in the water, they were trying to unhook the boat that was straining trying to float the trailer by its winch.  They had a little Isuzu something hooked to the truck to keep it from going deeper.  I guess they had actually pulled it up a bit already as it had been in halfway up the windshield.  They got the boat unhooked and tried pulling the truck up but the towing truck just spun its tires.  So I hooked up and we pulled the truck out.

It's a shame as it was a nice little pickup.  Here are some photos.

Wow good story lol, wish I would have been there to see that one. Cant imagine trying to pull a boat that size with a truck that small.

Kind of like 4th of July weekend at the launch. I'm sure he had good intentions but wow...that is a lot of boat to try and pull out with that truck. Should 'a seen that one coming.

Yikes not fun at all. My dads dodge tried to do it to me once. His floor shifter kicked into neutral when I was backing down the ramp with my boat. Did not know it since I just had my foot on the brakes coasting back. Set the parking break launched the boat and then jumped in to take off up the ramp. Everytime I would let the clutch out and take my foot off the brake I would roll back about a foot. Took me a few tries to figure out was going on and I was getting a little deep :chuckle:

Saw guy launch with a Toyota Supra once. Might have gone better but he forgot to unhook the straps of the back. It flaoted the trailer which pulled the car in right behind it.

Is this what they mean when they say that a boat is a hole in the water that sucks your money down?  :chuckle:  :chuckle:

I used to love to eat lunch and watch people launch their boats at Lake Samammish State park boat launch. My Favorite was a Corvette that was trying to pull out 21ft Bayliner on wet asphalt! Now that was a smoke show!

The boat ramp at Gene Coulon Park (Lake Washington) on a hot Saturday in the Summer is great cheap entertainment, LOL

That's a shame.  Old truck like that ('58ish?), has lived it's life just fine until this point, and then through no fault of it's own gets dragged into the salt.  Brutal.

With a boat that big couldn't they ire the boat up and have to push the truck a little further up the ramp?

I was thinking it was too bad we don't have a lake here that they could just have dunked it into to rinse everything.  I'm not sure what their plan is but can find out if anyone is interested.

I worked at Narrows Marina every summer as a kid. We use to sit there and laugh, while watching people lauch their boat and everything they own into the water. Go on Youtube and type in "launching boat". Plenty of entertainment for an evening.

Perhaps that man should downsize his boat and invest in a new truck. He should have known better....

Its more scary to me that these people try to pull these boats down the road with severely undersized vehicles.  It is a good thing that what happened was harmless, and no one was killed trying to get that thing from A to B.

No worries on endangering others on the road, we have only a few miles of gravel roads out here.   ;)
