Lbs of meat?
« on: April 09, 2013, 09:24:24 AM »
How many pounds of meat are on a typical blacktail doe?  And buck?
Just curious on what to expect if I draw a 2nd deer tag since they are all antlerless.
My friend ended up getting 103 lbs of meat back from the butcher off of his blacktail buck. Butcher said that was on the larger end for this area (kitsap).
Thanks!

I'd say 50-70 from a mature doe, depending on location.  Most of the 2nd deer tags for blacktail are on the islands though.  Those deer are MUCH smaller.  I think I remember lokidog saying they run 20-40lbs of meat on the islands

We have taken lots of does of the islands. The does average  56 to 65 pounds after the head and hide are removed. I would say you get about 35 to 40 pounds of meat out of a average Lopez BLk tail deer. Bucks we have taken average around 80 to 100 pounds. Don't get me wrong I have seen big a-s-s one come off Private property's. After butchering the bucks we get about 50 to 65lbs of meat. The deer run smaller on the islands. Vashon gets pretty big deer.

I think bone in... I'm not re familiar with what cuts have bone left in them though.  He just got roasts, steaks, and ground.  I know the roasts he gave me had no bone, same with the 2 steaks, but I think he had a roast with a bone in, and some steak that way... lots of ground meat.  love that deer spaghetti!

Depends on where you hit the deer with your shot. Right through the lungs, and you won't waste any meat. If you hit it on the shoulder or in the neck, then you got to trim some of that shot up meat when you butcher it.

There must be some fat does running around. I'd say I average 40 or 50 off an average blacktail buck. 50 would be if I don't hit a shoulder. Can't say on a doe I've never shot a blacktail doe.

I assume your trying to get a second deer tag kitsap..as am I. Thus some decent does running around. Since its a doe that equats to a head shot, no wasted meat. Maybe 50lbs off the bone. Even the biggest bucks only yield on average 70-75 lbs of bone off meat. Its like the 1/3 rule. 200lb deer, 1/3 is usable meat.

Yeah, me and a bunch of buddies.  Have you seen the success rate on those? Its only like 25% or something.  And several people don't hunt it even if they draw.  That's crazy to me.  But yeah, me and most of my buddies are going to put in for it. This is all of our first year though, so its just going to be 1 point each for us.  You never know, one of us might get lucky.  If so I have a private land spot or 2 that should work out nicely.  2nch choice will be vashon-murray, because I think that's much more of a sure bet, and I'll just start knocking on doors of little 5 acre farms!  :)

If you get burger/sausage etc there is fat added to consider.  70lb of pure meat is a good deer imop. :dunno:
