.17 HMR Winchester Super Magnum
« on: April 28, 2013, 06:41:04 AM »
So I was poking around on the interweb last week and came upon the 17 hmr mag. This looks like it would be a fun little gun to shoot with out breaking the bank. It seems the ammo is going to be in the same price range as regular 17 ammo! However a couple of days ago the savage rep told me its going to be a while before these hit the shelves, I cant wait to actually get my hands on one and because I think this plinker might be a great ground squirrel gun!

The cartridge is based on the 27mm nailgun round.  Winchester owns Olin, the maker of the nailguns & ammo, so they'll probably be the only ones making it, probably causing it to be more costly than 17 HMR.  :twocents:

You very well could be right but from the stuff that I have been reading about it online it was looking like it would be around the same price, and we all know whatever in on the internet has to be true right!  :chuckle:

It's not uncommon for a manufacturer to announce a new gun 6-8 months before it becomes available.  As was the case when the 17 HMR was new.  At first, you could get the ammo, but not the gun.  then you could get the gun but no ammo.  Now they are both pretty common.

Ive heard aboit it but havent seen a date on getting the rifles out. Winchester is only a name now. Olin owns the rights to it and most guns are made by browning.

I think the thing that will save it will be that more than one manufacturer will chamber a gun for it.  When the 5mm came out years ago, only one gun was made for it, and it lost popularity almost immediately!  :twocents:
