Tribal Hunting

I am looking for some help tracking a photo down. There is a rumor going around Ellensburg about a photo in the Spokesman Review that shows 26 spike bulls in one photo lined up with the caption stating that they are from the Colockum Area taken by members of the Yakama Nation. If anyone knows anything or has a copy of this photo any info would be appreciated.

I looked online and couldnt find anything about that. I would say your best avenue of research would be to find the actual paper that it was in. I dont think it will be found electronically. youll have to find somewhere that has the spokesman review archived. maybe its just a rumor.

Was this supposed to have been recently? I sure hope not. That's a major dent in legal bull population for one year!!

From the story I heard it had happened this year. It is upsetting as the WDFW is talking of changing the spike only rules in GMU 328 and 329 due to not enough spike surviving. I am trying to find some facts to go with the rumors.

In some ways I hope it is true. Our only hope of changing things is for them to do stuff so stupid that the people of this state (non-hunters)  get so upset, it becomes a real issue in an election year.

Why does it matter what they shoot? They only take what they want and leave the rest for the wolves!!! Its with any animal they kill!!! Salmon get gutted for there eggs, bear for the gul bladders and they leave deer hanging for weeks on in until they rot and throw them away!!!! I grew up next to a rez and I have zero respect for about 90% of them. There are good Native Americans don't get me wrong but they are few and far between. They took 12 elk out of the nooksack elk herd about 5 years ago before we had any permits for that area. Needless to say several of them were just backstrapped out and left. You can report it but most of the time it gets sweep under the rug!!! Its just not far what they get away with!!!! Sorry about my venting

Until the tribes start cracking down on their own, it will not change.  Those who don't obey the tribal rules are usually slapped on the hand and that's it. 

Some say they really don't take that many. they are just a small number compared to the non-native.  The problem lies in unreliable reporting of activity IF any.  How do we know? Cripes the WDFW doesn't know.

To me it's even bigger than hunting and fishing.  It's having special privileges above anyone else.  So much for the constitution.    If they are a sovereign nation, then those privileges should be contained to their 'nation'. Not allowed in mine!

wow they are shooting spikes now? Last i heard they were killing the biggest bulls they could find. The clockum and quilemene was there biggest target but i heard they went to green canyon, which is the farthest west before 97. Many or the locals here think if they can kill our elk like they did in the old days, why can't we scalp them now? haha

I ran into some tribal hunters from Oregon who had hunting rights in DAYTON and each one had 5 tags. Of course these guys were not your average native. They were true hunters, horses, and skill. They had already killed a couple monster bulls. I know they donate the meat to the tribe but remember they do hunt for TROPHY HORNS.  OH ya, they were from OREGON. Must be nice to hunt Wenaha, blue creek, dayton, tucanannon, and all of south east WA and North east OR.  REAL DEAL MY FRIENDS.  50% for 2% of our population

Ya those tribal tag numbers play a huge part in why there are so few tags available to sport hunters in the BLues. THe bios have to guess and figure worst case numbers on how many big bulls the natives will kill and then we get a few tags. Blue Creek hasn't had tags for a few years due to tribal overhunting I believe. I guess those big bulls and the meat that is tough as whang leather is what subsistence hunting is all about. nwhunter

That is true about the blues, but blue creek a does has tags for archery, muzzy, and riffle
