What to buy?
« on: May 17, 2013, 10:01:06 AM »
I got a bear outbreak 2013 and I'm thinking about selling it.  I'm going hunting for elk in montana in october, what type of gun should I buy.  I'm thinking something in the 250-500$ range, and a rifle

a rifle.  or maybe muzzleloader.  it all depends what you like, what you want, how much you want to spend, whether or not you like wood or synthetic, blued or stainless...  want us to pick your wife for you, too?   :yike: :chuckle:

he makes a good point.

But if you are asking what a good caliber is???.....
then that's pretty easy to answer.
.243 cartridges work...
but I believe .30 cartidges are more appropriate.

or bigger....

A .270 WSSM would be a great all around gun.
Or maybe a .30/06.
That's what I first bought. It'll kill elk, Moose, Bear, Bigfoot or whatever.

Hell... if you get in close, a 12 ga slug gun would be fine.
You could pick that up for $200-$300.

Keep an eye out on the Classifieds section of this site. Lots of great used guns.

Give Savage a look.  They make a great accurate and inexpensive gun.  I've got a 30.06 composite stock, stainless steel barrel.  I bought it (minus scope) for around $550 a couple of years back.

I shoot a ruger M77 MkII in 300 win, stainless with the laminate wood stock and i love it. It is big enough to hunt any thing i will come in contact with.

My son shoots a Marlin XL7 in .270 win, i love this rifle. 5 shot 1 inch groups @ 200 yards is the norm. My son shot a big cow this year 2 shots and he put her down in her tracks. I really like shooting it. If i was going to buy another rifle for myself i would buy another Marlin in .270. I bought his marlin with a 3x9 leupold rifleman scope on it for 459 as a package. Best shooting 250 dollar rifle i have ever laid my hands on.
