I recently recieved my hunters ed card and am ready to get hunting. I was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers on how to get started. I live in skagit county and have been told that Devils Mountain in mount vernon is a great place to start hunting. I was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers on

What are you looking to hunt? And what weapon do you want to hunt with, Rifle, Bow, Muzzleloader?

Hi huntingdog,

I too am new to hunting (taking my field test in June). As far as equipment goes, I know Sitka and Core4Element have a great reputation. The Sitka gear runs off of a layering system which IMO is probably the best way to go. It's a bit pricey so if you can find lightly used items I'd suggest going that route first.

Also check out www.camofire.com they have a lot of really great rotating daily deals on knives, backpacks and other gear.

Where are you located, how far are you willing to drive? Are you interested in stand hunting, spot and stalk, back country, or road hunting?

Id say research this site as much as possible about the areas you want to hunt, Read elk and Blacktail deer books as much as posibble and when you find a spot scout it like crazy and then read those boks again..

If you bow hunt, practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more.
My Dad always said, " Get a bigger hammer "

Don't know much about that area but there is allot of deer! I'd be glad to research a bit maybe find some land to scout and meet up and help you out and maybe find some new areas to hunt myself.

Elk is permit only in that area. For deer...head up the valley and start scouting. Get a good pack and game bags for meat removal. A mountain bike will open up more areas.

WATERPROOF CLOTHING and boots. Rivers west gear is the best. also Get some Scent-a-way laundry detergent, regular stuff will make you glow bright in deer vision. If you're still hunting, do it SLOW, so slow it almost becomes boring, just take it in. Goodluck.
